Excellent photos.
Another very good Islay image site, concentrating on standing stones, is from
Clive Ruggles' collection at:

I wish I was there!

Steve,
The way it is now we have flexibility. I use Lotus Notes; when I reply to a
message, the sender's name comes up in the To: field. If I then hit 'Reply to
All', the whole mailing list gets cc:'d. So I vote #1 because I can decide
whether I want my reply to be broadcast or not.

Is anyone familiar with the following families?
Malcolm McGillivray and Ann McKaig of Balole, Kilmeny parish; children Donald
(1812), Jean (1814), Peter (1816), Mary (1818), James (1821), Margaret (1823),
John (1826), Dougald (1828), Bess (1830) and Malcolm (1832).
or
Peter McGillivray and Catherine McKay, children Donald (1831), John (1835),
Duncan (1840) and Neil (1842).

Islay, a Scottish Treasure
If you believe that the Scots are dour and stingy then you probably have
never been to Scotland and you most certainly have never been to Islay.
Islay (Eye-la) called the "Jewel of the Hebrides" is the southernmost
of that island group. It's a tenth the size of Prince Edward Island but
it contains a fabulous variety of things to see and do. Islay's verdant
landscape of peat banks, moors and rocky highlands is always accentuated
by the crashing beauty of its jagged coastline.

the unveiling of the cairn to sir lachlan maclean was covered in the ileach
last year sometime (can't remember which one and i'm not in the office just
now). if anyone's interested, i could unearth the appropriate article and
post it to the list. there may be photos somewhere since the editor,
dorothy carmichael did take some with our digital camera. however, since we
print in black and white, any photos we still have are probably in
monochrome.
the cairn is situated near aoradh (pronoun

well so far it seems to be leaning fairly well in favor of "replies to the
list"
some of the comments made were very well taken:
cory had a comment about finding jewels of info in other people's replies,
and i would tend to agree with that - 100%. almost all the other lists i
subscribe to are open replies to all, and i have learned things from other
people's notes.
some of you have different email programs that allow you to choose where
your reply is headed, but a lot of people have less sophisticated s
Hi Steve
I vote a "2" - I often learn things from other peoples replies which
do not have any direct reference to my research - The Fife List works
this way and is a very active list as a result!

Thanks, Russ for the tip on the image pages.
Also, to members of the list, in advance...
I will be visiting Islay in late August this year, and I'm wondering if
those of you who've been there already have ideas about what 'not to
miss', or practical tips for the trip. I don't drive, but I have been
told I won't have much trouble getting around, so please let me know what
you think.

greetings all,
a question to the group regarding the routing of message "replies"....
i currently have the list set up, so that when you reply to a message to the
list - you reply only to the author of the message.
the settings can be changed so that replies go to the entire list, instead
of only one person.
personally, i would prefer to change the replies so that we can reply to
everyone - but as i believe in some sense of democracy - i would like to
take a poll of all of you.....
please let me know wh
Hi to everyone out there:
I am still looking for clues as to the uncles of Peter McDougall who
preceded him to Canada, and settled most likely in or around Minto Twp.
in the area of Harriston in the Bruce Peninsula.
Peter was born or christened on the 4th of July 1824 - source: Gaelic
McDougall family bible. He was the third child born to John McDougall
and Janet/Jessie McNab. Although his older brother Duncan, and sister
Anne show up in the records for Kildalton Parish, there is nothing
for Peter. I
If I have this right I should get this back. I am intensely interested in
McAlister and Ferguson familys on Islay aound 1765 and forward. This is a
test.
I am researching my paternal line, traceable to Alexander MCPHEE/MCDUFFIE
who married Margaret MCLERGEN/MCLEAN in 1821, Kildalton, Islay. They had 13
children: Ann (1822), Margaret (abt 1824), John (1825), Mary (1828), Jessie
(1833), Catherine (1834), Isabella (abt 1835), Meney/Sarah (1837), Elizabeth
(1838), Jane (1841), Euphemia (abt 1842), Flora (1843); Alexander, my
grandfather, was born in 1846, but evidence of his birth has not as yet been
found. Earlier generations are currently being researched.
alright, i've just changed the protocol on the list so that when you reply,
your message goes back to the list.
the majority of you had expressed your preference for this set-up, and i
feel that the overall benefits, far outweigh any real issues...i
wholeheartedly agree with most of you about gathering as much info to dig
through as possible - and if it doesn't pertain to your research - delete
it!
a couple of people had expressed concern that this set-up contributes to a
"chat-room" environment - person
well i don't have to tell anyone i'm envious of you, diane! have fun on
your trip!
as i haven't been there either (yet...), i can't offer much advice - all
i've seen are pictures!
i also have a question for those "islay" experts out there:
as i live in seattle, and our state has some archaic liquor control laws -
there is a very limited selection of islay single malts available here in
washington state.
now mind you, i'm no boozer - but i can't resist sampling some of the
island's best!

Hi, from Diane, Burnaby, B.C., Canada
I will vote for #2 as I do like to read everyone's letters, and
feel I've learned quite a lot about Islay and Islay families from those
I've seen on this list. We can still always reply privately when we wish.

Hi Steve - I vote #2 - one never knows when some jewel will turn up in
someone else's message - that can be a great asset in a mail list like
this - right on! Keep up the good work! Cory Smith

I am searching for any information on the family of Daniel McNIVEN (or
NIVEN as he was known here) who was born ca. 1742 on the Isle of Islay.
He came to New York City in 1770 and soon volunteered his services to the
colonists seeking independence from Great Britain. Samuel Eager in the "
History of Orange County, NY" wrote:
"Becoming acquainted with Washington, who soon saw the true and determined
character of the young and active man, he received a commission of
Lieutenant of Engineers and was much emp
My great grandfather Donald Jamieson was born, I believe, on December 14,
1847, in Kilchoman Parish, Islay. He married Jessie Waddell born in Dunoon
Parish January 28, 1852. They were the parents of nine children: John,
Gavin, Flora, Ann, Jessie, Archibald, Alex, Donald, and James. My grandfather
was Gavin Jamieson, born 1877 at Glenlean, near Sandbank, by Dunoon. I
believe his sister Flora lived in Islay as late as the 1950's and that
grandchildren and great-grandchildren still live there. I would b
