Would anyone researching McLeans have a Donald and Margaret that had a
daughter Janet born about 1816-18 and then came to Ontario? I have a
Janet McLean who married my John McNeil in Lanark Co. in 1835 and
according to the naming pattern, I think Janet's parents may have been
Donald and Margaret.
Also, the above John McNeil's parents were also John McNeil and Janet
McLean married in 1785 in Aren or Arine. This John McNeil was born in
Druingigha. Any information on McLeans that might be related would b
Leafing through my aunt's old copy of McAlpine's Pronouncing Gaelic
Dictionary (first published in 1832) I came across this entry - which she
had marked:

Anyone else have a reference to this? or know the origin of the name?

Hi Ida and all,
I saw Elaine was able to supply the birth years for her McKinnon family
found on the Selkirk and Coy information that Ida supplied.
Is there anyway this family below could be dated? I have a Catherine
McGilvra (McGillivary) in my family tree.
> Archd McGilvera..45..Camberon
> Mary McLean.wife.40
> Hugh 19
> John 25
> Ann 22

Also, . . . where is Camberon?
Kind regards,

Re your MacArthur info. from "Inhabitants of the Inner Isles Morvern
and Arnamurchan 1716", edited by Nicholas Maclean-Bristol, Isle of Coll,

with the list. Was wondering if you know if there were any Mc/MacPhee's
on this list. Would be most grateful for this information. Thanks.

Hi all,
Thanks to Jean and Tom for your queries re: the book on the Highland
Clearances.
The ISBN number is: 0224 02750 6. The book may be out of print. I bought
my paperback copy in Scotland in 1994. Subsequently we tried to order a
second copy in Canada, but were told it was unavailable. Then three years
ago my father bought a different edition here in Canada - if he still has
the book, I'll find out the publisher and post it. You might have luck
through the library - my small local library here in To
Thanks for your note Frank! Glad you enjoyed my comments.
Here is a question for you and for others on the list:
In the 1851 census my McDougall family is listed at Kilninian, also a neice, Mary Sprow, 6 years old, from Glasgow. On IGI the closest name I could find was "Sprowl", Mary, born December 28, 1843, parents Robert Sprowl and Mary McColl, Barony, Lanark.
I believe there has to be a Mull connection,-- perhaps the mother, Mary McColl, was from Mull.
Any ideas?

Hi Tom
Hopefully someone can answer your question as to the location of
Penceroy.
I'm sure you've had numerous responses regarding how fortunate you are
to have such prize possessions as your letters.
This may seem rather snoopy.....but would you be willing to share a few
excerpts or the letter in it's entirety with the list. As I for one
would be most interested in getting more of a feel of the experiences
these ancestors of our must of had.
Some of us less fortunate have nothing to claim as belonging

Hi All
If anyone happens to locate a book or any information pertaining to Mull
please post it to the list. My personal choice would be if someone
located some passenger lists from Mull to Ont. in print.
Jill D.... I don't mind the publicity for Jo's forthcoming book. FYI I
asked Jo to join our group when the news broke of her book. She has
graciously accepted. When she has all the details of postage etc. I have
asked her to post the information to the list so we can all place our
orders.

Hi Liz...
I can't find your in the 1851 census, but there is a Montgomery at
Kilchroman in the census for Salen
MONTGOMERY John 27 shepherd born Hutton Dmfrs
Mary 21 wife born Ulva
John 2 son
Duncan 5months son
If you want to talk of the fringes of Mull I guess Ulva might be considered
that way!!
That seems to be the only entry in the 1851 census.
Happy searching Jean Whimp

Hi Russell;
This may be a long shot (but given the plethora of name changes may be a
connection)and the age is vaguely right. A Mary STUART sailed for Sydney
from Tobermoray on the "George Fyfe" in 1839. She is meant to have sailed
with some of her family. She later married John McFarlane who left with his
father Duncan in 1838 on the "British King".
Some colleagues on the list may know a bit more about this Mary Stuart.

Hello List
I posted a query similar to this some weeks ago, so I'm going to try
again. I have been contacted by another Macquarrie hunter who is trying
to get some background on one of his ancestors, Vear / Veir / Vere

Hi all,
Just re-read the last few weeks' postings, and noticed the letters re: the
Highland Clearances. For a thoughtful and very moving account, read a
splendid book called "On the Crofters' Trail - In search of the Clearance
Highlanders", by Scottish writer David Craig. (Published in 1990 by
Jonathan Cape Ltd.) It's well written, based on years of story-tracking and
research in Scotland (all through the Highlands and Islands, including Mull
and specifically Tobermory, the Ross of Mull and Bunessan) and in
Has anyone on this list come across a Gaelic name or another name for "Lucy"?
I have been told that "Luisaigdh" was the Gaelic word.
There is a Lucy McGREGOR that has turned up in my research (not directly
connected to my family) but think that Lucy may have been a nickname. Could
this be Louise, etc.?
Any ideas of another name for "Lucy"? Lucy is not coming up in search results.
Thanks for your help.

Hello,
Anyone who is not shy about being on TV and would like to have an
opportunity to travel back to their ancestral homeland, may have an interest
in this posting. I apoligize if you receive this posting more than once
because you may be on some of the same lists that I'm on.

"Lucy" doesn 't strike me as a Scottish name, let alone a Gaelic one.
It can come from Lucille, Lucilla, Louise, Lucretia, (all of which
are English or continental) and perhaps other others, none of which
have Gaelic roots.
I think it more likely that "Lucy" might be a nickname, having no
connection to the woman's given name, as you suggest.
How certain are you that Gaelic was the family language? Might they
might have been using English names.

Connie, I wonder if you are a member of the Port Phillip Pioneers Group of
the Genealogical socy of Victoria. With ancestors arriving before July

people. Let me know if you want more details.
