I will try this query again to see if anyone knows about census records
for Mull or Argyle.
Query:: Does anyone know if there was any census taken before 1820 for
the Isle of Mull, Argyle or an Argyle Co. census?
Thanks, any help appreciated.

Hi Ross McKechnie in Sask. and other listers,
I'm just catching up on my Isle of Mull mailing list after being gone for
over 5 weeks. I noticed Ross's McKECHNIE listing and the similarities in
names to my McKechnies and another family's McKechnies. My g-g grandparents
(Archibald McKechnie and Catherine McGillivray) were born on Mull and
immigrated to Ontario and eventually to Glenelg Township. Their second son,
my great granduncle, was Hugh, and he was born about 1840 and later married
Flora McDonald in

Here is what I have found so far on this disaster:
The Mary of Iona was struck and sunk on August 10, 1822. Accounts were carried
in the contemporary issues of the Glasgow Herald, the Greenock Advertiser and
the Inverness Herald, although those accounts may have called the ship the
Katherine of Iona. According to E. Mairi MacArthur in her book, "Iona, The
Living Memory of a Crofting Community 1750-1914" (Edinburgh University
Press:1990; ISBN# 0-7486-0214-3) there were 2 ships that left Greenock that
day
Hi Everyone,
I have a question that doesn't really pertain to genealogy. Does anyone actually live on Mull? I was curious what kind of weather they have there (i.e.. Hurricanes, Downpours, flooding, tornadoes, etc...) If you guys don't feel my question should have been asked than please just disregard. I really don't like getting bad emails about something I did. No offense to anyone, it was a totally different list. Anyway, If anyone does know I would really appreciate it. I am trying to get a feel
One of my friends found some of the 1822 articles about the sinking of the Mary

Nicol (pronounced "Nickel") McIntyre was one of my great, greats. Of the three
daughters you mentioned, it appears that one was Ann McIntyre who married Donald
Beaton and they were the parents of seven daughters known as the Seven Beaton
Sisters of Archiavaig. A daughter, Meron (Sarah) Beaton, married Donald McLean
and they were my 3x great grandparents. At least some of Nicol's children were
the first converts to the Baptist faith in 1821 and the core of the Baptist
Church on the Ross of Mull. There ar
Im searching for a John Bell, born about 1799 in Mull. He was a Hudson
Bay Chief Trader after joining the company and coming to the North
West. He married in 1830 to Nancy (Anne) Dease, born ca 1813 and died
20 Sept 1846 in Norway House. They had six children that I know of.
John Bell retired from the company and died 24 June 1866 in Saugeen,
Ontario. I have a copy of his will which was probated in London. Is
there any way I may discover his parish or, better yet, his parents,
siblings, etc.?

On my recent trip to Mull I recorded as many M.Is as I could, but can't
guarantee that there aren't errors in some of the dates. Many stones were
so weathered that numbers were difficult to decipher, but I did the best I
could in a very limited timeframe. I'll be posting these as I get them
typed up, and shall also send the files to Ian so that they can be available
through the Mull pages (if he thinks them worth including).
These are from Scoor (Kilvickeon) cemetery, which is a very old graveyard

British censuses were taken every ten years beginning in 1801, but those before
1841 were merely head counts and are of no value to genealogists. The Duke of
Argyll did a "census" of the tenants on his lands in 1779 that included his
lands in Argyll and Mull. This was only for the Duke's properties and did not
include all of Mull or Argyll. There was also a "census" taken for his mainland
properties--I think it was in 1792. There are no other censuses.
There also a few lists of limited value:

Hi Mary:
I copied as many of the monumental inscriptions from various graveyards on
Mull as I could manage during my all too brief visit there last month. So
far I have only typed out the ones for Scoor cemetery, which is 2 - 3 miles
from Bunessan on the Ross of Mull, but one of these looked promising for

Hello Jill:
I will be very excited to see the MIs for Scoor cemetery. I have a
relation listed as living in Bunessan at the time of the 1779 census.
Do you know if Scoor cemetery is the nearest to Bunessan?
Many thanks,
