Totally understandable! If you don't mind a little help from a distant
cousin, I descend from William Alexander McDougald/McDougall and Catherine
Buie - both born Jura c, 1800 and immigrated to North Carolina, US around
1839 - I can see what I can find for you...
What exactly are you looking for? If you can - names, dates and places.
Blessings,
Janet
Hello,
Iam trying to find more info. about my 9th great grandfather,
Duncan Campbell of Jura Island.
He had a daughter named Jane (Jean) Campbell, who married
a McCollum (Zachary, I believe).
They had a son, John McCollum (my 7th great grandfather), who
ended up in Basking Ridge, New Jersey and lived to the age of 103.
Any help with this Duncan Campbell lineage would be very
appreciated.
Thanks Sincerely,
Lisa

Would just like to say that I am aware of the Buie book which I understand
is good, BUT it is only available from Scott himself and anyone in UK has to
pay the extra charges involved in the exchange rate and transfer of the cost.
Which in my personal opinion prohibits me from geetting the book as the
charges exceed the cost.

Hi, Lisa,
I have run into a stone wall looking for my ancestor, Archibald Brown, born on the Isle of Jura, settled and died in Chatham Co, NC...
but maybe I can help you on Duncan Campbell.
Here is the best info I could find online. Best of Luck.

Thank you....
Will surely do some digging around. You gave some really good
places to
search, places that I've not known to search. Again, thank you so
much.

I would also like to recommend the book:
The People of the Parish of Jura, Scotland, 1506 - 1811, by Scott Buie.
It is available from the author at: Scott Buie
I found it very useful in researching my Shaw and McCraney lines.
Remember: Some of the spelling of surnames is very imaginative.

Patrick McAurthur is on page 209 and 279. This Patrick was married to Mary
McDougall and sailed from Islay to New York in July 1738 with Charles, Colin
and Janet his 3 children. They also had a son John in 1733 in Knockrome.
Perhaps he died young. Patrick was said to be a catechist. This means he may have
been a pastor or a priest. On page 209 it states that he was a Catechist in
Jura and had his salary reduced so much that he could not subsist on it. The
salary was 6 pounds sterling. M

HI
I am from the McCranie family that came from the Isle of Jura, Scotland to
North Carolina. I have a book called JURA Island of the Deer by Peter
Youngson. There is some information about the McNeil's on the Isle of Jura and
Argylshire area. There is a Neil listed but he is from the 1700's. There is a
list of families that went to Canada but I do not see McNeil listed there, but
the McNeil family is listed as a prominent family from this island. There are
several McNeil's listed as a '39er.
There are many references to the McAurthur family as they were a prominent
family on Jura but I can't find these particular individuals. Sorry

I keep getting these notices of mail waiting for me. My husband was the

Hi Teresa,
I checked all Colonsay baptisms from 1800 to 1820 . There were many McNeills but only 2 Donalds baptised
1. June 29, 1811 Donald McNeill born to Alexander McNeill and Marrion McFarlan
2. Feb. 6, 1813 Donald McNeill born to Duncan McNeill and Mary Bell
-married Ann Buie and came to Elderslie Township, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada
The reason I checked before and after 1807 is if you are getting this date from a Death registration , it is only as good as
Thanks Karen,
I understand that Peter and Patrick were interchangeble. I should have said
Patrick as that is what is noted for his birth Feb 1705 in Knockrome/Tarbot
Jura Island with father Neil and mother Margrat, was there anything that
would be more information on that family? Thank you so much for taking the
time to look.

Karen thank you so much, that is my Patrick/Peter and he did leave in 1738
with Laughlan Campbell to the Argyll Patent in New York state.
I wish there were more history on his father Neil and mother Margret.
Again thank you for looking and it did give me more information on him than
I have had before.

There are several references in this book to the McArthur family but I
cannot find the first names of Neil and Peter. I will keep looking but on first
looking over all the index , the names Patrick, Duncan, Neil, Thomas, Catherine
are mentioned.
