In the message by Ken from Melbourne, Vic. I have found the data anout
Allan family from Glasgow (?):
>The Allan family were building contractors, apparently of all sorts of
>constructions. They built a housing estate known as the "Allandale Estate"
>in the vicinity of the Glasgow Exhibition c.1910, at about this time they

I know that the Allan family rented the Hafton House (Estate) near Dunoon,
Argyll in the period c. 1850-1922 (?). Is it the same family as above ?
In my efforts to trace Joseph Allan I have unearthed the following; he
belonged to the Masons although which lodge or chapter I don't know, he kept
the goat that was the mascot of his particular lodge. Is the Grand Lodge of
Scotland forth coming with details of past members? If SKS could check this
out for me I would be eternally grateful. Since he died at the beginning of
the first world war this may present some difficulties. I have no idea how
old he was when he died or the exact year, however I do now

Hi,
Is it possible that this is a title rather than a given name? To confirm
my memory, I checked with the Oxford dictionary that notes "Bailie" was a
municipal officer and magistrate in Scotland. Now, of course, a person could
have been given that term as his given name for prestige but in many years of
doing and teaching Scottish genealogy, I have never seen this as

Dear Liz,
Sorry to say there are no monuments to speak of at Kilbarchan
West Church. There are no early death records either. This was
the first church in Kilbarchan. Then some of the congregation
split forming another church in Kilbarchan making 2 separate
congregations. They have quite a
lot of tombstones in their church yard but I am sorry to say I
have no information about a listing of them. Please let me
know if you find something like this because I know people
of my ancestral names BARR and
I agree with Irene. In MOST of Scotland, siblings living simultaneously
and named identically are rare or non existent. Using a name a second time
after a previous holder died is much more common.

I am trying to find Matthew STEVENSON and/or Ellen CARSWELL. Both put
"Scotland" as their place of birth on their 1881 census return - but I
don't know where exactly. Matthew STEVENSON was born on 26th September 1833
(from death certificate), Ellen CARSWELL was born c.1840 or 1841 (from age
on census). They married c. 1860-65, but I don't know where (Scottish and
English records offices searched to no avail).
Further details of this couple and their descendants can be found on my web

Hi there,
I am Thelma WANNENBURGH (nei TAYLOR).
We have retired to a mountain village, Montagu, in the Little Karoo , Western Cape , South Africa.
My grandfather - Henry Marshall TAYLOR- came out to South Africa from Glasgow area in 1901 to teach in Bloemfontein. The Anglo-Boer war was still on so he had to teach in the concentration camps. I would love to contact a cousin! I can trace his family back to 1793.
I am interested in these Renfrewshire families: TAYLOR; MARSHALL; RENFREW; BAXTER.
Hi John,
No Baillie is either a Civic title equivalent to Magistrate which by
tradition the holder is entitled to keep for life, even after he ceases to
hold office, either by being voted out of office or retiring. The surname
Baillie is Norman French from the baillie in a castle and the Baillie family
come from just outside Inverness, the present head of the Baillie of
Dochfour family being Lord Burton, whose title comes from his grandmother,
daughter and heiress of the Bass brewing family.
Regards,
Mark,
I am researching the family of ROBERT FLEMING and JANET ROBERTSON who had children born in PAISLEY HIGH CHURCH and LOW CHURCH in 1840 to 1850. Some are buried there and I would like to know if the records are available online. Also DANIEL ROBERTSON and MARY GEMMILL the parents of JANET ROBERTSON.

Sharing the following great news from Scots Origins (GRO) with list
members:
"Meantime, we are adding a further 25 years of deaths, taking us up to
1924.
The remaining years, 1918-1924 we shall be loading with the births &
marriages
for 1899 later this month."
Origins will announce the above sometime this week.
I had written and asked if the Registrar wouldn't consider allowing the
purchase of Death Certs after 1900 online since it was such a hassel
having to write snail mail and convert currency etc.
