1. UPGRADE: TMG Utility Version 6.0 [1]
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/9gB.2ACEAE/16 Message Board Post: UPGRADE ANNOUNCEMENT: TMG Utility Version 6.0 is now available. TMG Utility is the *essential* companion program for The Master Genealogist (TMG), and it's free! Among other things, TMG Utility makes bulk edits to TMG datasets. It is very useful for people moving their genealogy database from another product to TMG. Aft
2. Re: [2NDST] The "LIVING" Flag [0.981455]
Hi Bruce, As a fellow Goon [ surnames (Warn(e) & Wearn(e) ], may I thank you and others for your comments. I am at a loss about all this! Whether my import from a Legacy file into TMG 6 Gold UK had a hiccup or not, but when I changed to a direct Gedcom file import into TMG, the problem I saw went away [ The Legacy import seemed to set all Living flags to TRUE, but the direct Gedcom import allowed me to use TMG Utility to set the Living flag to a realistic value based on the age of a couple when the
3. Re: [2NDST] MrSID viewer [0.981455]
I beleive that there is a disclaimer on the Ancestry site that says some of the features they have will not work on a netscape based browser. The text below is from the Ancestry site in regards to MrSID Even though I followed these instructions, I still have problems. I contacted Ancestry and they said, though it is not in there FAQ files, that yes there are still problems, but to use the Firefox IE plug-in. This helped with some of the problems, but not all. Hope this helps. Carlton Brooks Mesa, Ar
4. Master Place Index and Witness Tag Locations [0.981455]
I have been experimenting with the Master Place Index before I add it to my site. I love it, but there is one thing that I am working on, and on which would appreciate some guidance. My site is in narrative format and I have chosen to include witnessed events. I use roles in TMG. An example of the issue I am seeing: My 3g-grandfather went to California during the gold rush and he died there. His family stayed behind in Missouri. I am have used roles on my death tags, and his wife is attached to

Second Site knows that rule, and so
6. RE: [2NDST] Size and organization of pages [0.981455]
I have also decided to go to one person per page: I keep getting messages from people saying that my site has wonderful information but they keep getting lost in the midst of 12,000+ people. Another person told me I really needed to do it over because it was terribly "disjointed". And just last week: > I continue to marvel at the scope of your work. >Just one comment - there's so much detail, >especially as it relates to all the feeders" >upstream and downstream, but there isn't a terribly >effectiv
7. RE: [2NDST] Copyright [0.981455]
I understand, from a genealogy conference a few years ago, that genealogy information such as birth dates, etc. cannot be copyrighted (because this is public information) but the format or form you present the information can be. This might be an over simplification. I'm sure there's a fine line here! 9. Re: [2NDST] Separate location for images (long response) [0.981455]
Kerry The last time I looked MrSid was free. MrSid is a type of file that has extremely good resolution with very low file storage necessary. It was originally used to store large maps so they could put many very large maps in a small storage area. Some of the census pages are large and some of the companies that provide census data used MrSid for the same reason. 10. Re: [2NDST] Selected events in TMG checked to be included in SS html output data are not appearing. [0.981455]
Wayne The TMG Utility will set the living flag to "N" for most of your ancestors that are dead if you enter the correct parameters in the program. It is very accurate. 11. Re: [2NDST] Towards adding search 4-ignore_files.txt and stop_terms.txt [0.981455]
2 more files to consider in ...\mypages-p\search\configuration\ stop_terms.txt contains a list of word that are ignored, one per line. Regardless of the settings in configuration.pl, these words are ignored by the indexer.pl script. I've made no changes to this file to date. ignore_files.txt contains a list of filenames and directories that are ignored when the indexer.pl script processes the site. It's in this file that I limited the scope of the indexing so that only the person pages are indexed. Th
12. RE: [2NDST] Size and organization of pages [0.981455]
Richard, that would make external links (like from search engines) possible point to the wrong version (or still point to the version being updated). Since my site is in a subdirectory anyway, I suppose I could update to a parallel directory and then send out rename commands (and then delete to old version). That would cause the site to be down for only a few seconds. i.e. active site is in the \genealogy\ directory. Upload site to \new\. When all done do a rename of \genealogy\ to \old\, then \new\ to \ge

14. RE: [2NDST] Separate location for images (long response) [0.981455]
I've considered using Mr.Sid images on my site but I'm fairly certain several relatives would be reluctant to install the browser plugin. There are two relatives who use Web TV. I don't know anything about Web TV so I don't know if it is even possible for them. One donorware progam (contributions accepted but free to download/use) occasionally mentioned on this list is IrfranView (http://www.irfanview.com/). It can be used to convert Mr.Sid images to .jpg, .tif, or many other image formats. I routinely

Thanks so very much to ALL of you for the great replies and good common sense which I seemed to have lost somewhere myself yesterday afternoon! :-D So far it's not another cranky day around here and Darrell, as always, has made me laugh and help get the day off to a good start! I sure appreciate all the very good advice and ideas on how to handle these requests, each of you gave me something good I can use in future. 17. Living People - Dates etc [0.981455]
I haven't yet upgraded to SS 1.8 and TMG 6, so maybe this is already a feature? I am working on my first upload of TMG/SS Family Data, having used TMG--> GEDCOM--> GEDLiving --> GEDPage up until now. That process does the job (see my site) with a Family Page for each family, and allows me to differentiate between Living/Non-Living persons. To give privacy to living persons, I want to restrict the Dates shown for them on my Second Site generation to YEAR only. However, for those no longer living it
18. Re: [2NDST] Sentence that works in TMG not working in SS 1.8 [0.981455]
Hello Richard, Thanks for the explanation you have given me. I still have a question. If I want to use roles and have the sentence appear correct grammatically in TMG reports ([R:Heir] was), then would it be correct that I have to create a second tag for SS use, substituting [W] for [R:Heir]? I can't see any other way to do this without using two separate tags - one for TMG narrative reports and one for SS. I want to make sure that I understand this completely before I start changing things, beca

20. Re: [2NDST] Is Second Site making a "real" mother into a foster mother? [0.981455]
Hi Virginia, That is exactly what I am seeing in the TMG6 project. What I do not understand is why they are so listed. Is this a "buglet" in TMG 6 or is there a change that is causing my Legacy 5 Genbridge import to appear thusly? [ The original gedcom import to a clean Legacy 5 database has the children as the biological children of each couple. ] It is only TMG6 that is not so recognizing them I should have said too that I am using SS 1.8.0 Why is TMG 6 making them all -fst? Sorry, should have "
