My grandfathr William Samuel Henry SHAND (could be William Henry Samuel Shand), whose mother was I believe a Pearson, married Mary Clara Louisa Simons from Merthyr. He was a Scot and an engineer. They lived for a time in Australia, where their eldest child Dorothea was born, and eventually settled in Chile. I am drawing a blank in trying to find what part of Scotland my grandfather came from, his dob or indeed anything about his family. Please help!
Hi Mary
Not an ancestor of mine.
I did once upon a time get an email from a Shand in South America - I
think it was Chile - So I think that they are still there.
Regards
Alastair Shand

Hello, Listers,
My Shand ancestors were from the Glenrinnes area of Mortlach parish in
Banffshire. I have the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses for that area and would
be happy to do any lookups.
I have traced my family back to James Shand who was a tacksman at
Tannachar/Tomachar in Glenrinnes in the mid 18th century.

Hi Joan
I wonder if we have a connection. I am descended from Alexander Shand born 1802 New Deer, to Joseph Shand, a meal miller, and Barbara Godsman. According to the IGI they were from Mill of Inkhorn, New Deer, but I haven't checked out the original parish records yet. Alexander's siblings were James christened 1794, Joseph 1796, John 1798, William 1800, Mary 1802, George 1804, and Jean 1808. Do you know who your John Shand's parents were? Could his father have been one of these Shands?

Welcome to the Shand mailing list - we already have 9 subscribers which is not oo bad considering we only started last Saturday!!
A bit about myself - Shand appears twice in my family tree. It is my mothers maiden name - I can trace her line back to a William Shand, who was a crofter of St Andrews Lhanbryd, Morayshire. He was either born under a cabbage or was an immaculate conception! William married Isobel Duncan and they had four sons;
James b1833 Lhanbryd
Alexander b 1835 Lhanbryd
George b 1837 Lha

Hi.
Thank you for your response; I am sure that if we go back some 40 generations, your Shand ancestors and mine were cousins or something. But the names and dates you mention don't relate to my lot of Shands.
Thank you anyway for taking the trouble to respond. All good wishes,

Hi Bridget & List,
where does one obtain the Shand family tree book by Fred Buckley?
I am seeking the descendants of the above. John Shand b: Speymouth, Scot M:
Mary Barclay 1851 in Scotland. They had at least nine children. He died in
Redfern, Sydney. His death cert states he was a builder.
I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you for your e-mail. I'm afraid I can't be any help, as I really have no idea where my grandfather Henry William Shand was born or whether he had any siblings. He married Mary Clara Louisa Simons and they emigrated to Chile in the late 1890s.
Their eldest son William fought in a Welsh regiment in WW1.
I have discovered a great deal about the Simons family but without a place of birth for my Shand grandfather, I'm pretty stuck. Shand is quite a common name in Scotland, it would seem.
Hi;
My Grandfather was Charles Shand who emigrated to
Canada shortly after WW1. He had served with the
artillary during the war. I know he came from Elgin,
Scotland and was married to Jean Douglas. He would
have been born btw 1895 and 1900. I believe they had 1
daughter born in Scotland - Nancy.
Any information would be appreciated.
Greg Shand,
Montreal, Canada
