Hello Listers,
Chris Woods was asking for details of the schooner "Duke of Wellington" said
to have been wrecked London in 1845.
Richard and Bridget Larn in "Shipwreck Index of the British Isles" list a
no. of vessels of this name wrecked on various parts of the British coast
but none for the Thames estuary nor for this date.
Though the Index is by far the best available it is by no means complete
even for the 19th and 20th centuries. It also contains a good number of
erroneous entries,

Good morning John,
I can tell you nothing about the loss of the 'Heroine' but by coincidence
have just been given some copis of ship records from Norfolk which include a
'Heroine' of this name, official number 5105:
registered Clay No2/1851 (28/2/1851) 55 tons 1 mast - 2 masts 21st July
1882 = sloop, altered to Ketch. At some unknown date her register was
closed and she was logged for inland use only
Doesn't sound like yours but if this is I can pass you a little more detail
about her origins
Chris
Good Morning!
I have a Stephen and Catharine Hicks CERONIO, who had been married a
while -- long enough to have three children, anyway!
He left Philadelphia for Batavia, East Indies in 1793. Now in 1794,
Catharine *remarried* a Jacques SERVEL at the very same church,
Gloria Dei in Philadelphia!
Had they divorced? Possibly... Had his ship wrecked? I don't know.
Do you know? Are you aware of any ship from Philadelphia to
Batavia, East Indies that, somewhere between 1793 and 1794 was lost
at sea?
Tha
John,
The coincidence was to good to miss, happy hunting,
Chris

Hello List
Obituary
George Henry Vandegriff
Accoding to the Daily Delta, 3/21/1851, page 2, c 5, he was the son of
Dewitt Clinton and Margaret Vandegriff.
But a few weeks have passed since we recall the deaths of 5 children of those
bereaved parents caused by exposure and want of nourishment while on an
uninhabited island in the West Indies, where they were landed from the
Schooner Thorn. Thus have 6 children between 11 months and 11 years in the
short space of three months been swept from their fo
Dear Chris
Many thanks for your quick response. Unfortunately she is not my "Heroine"
which was 261 tons; I should have mentioned that of course!
Thank you again

Hi again,
Thank you Carl for your reply to my query about the wreck of the 'schooner 'Duke of Wellington'
The reference to it's being wrecked is from the registers of Cley (Norfolk) shipping NR) P/SH/L/10
and the final entry for her states:
"6 1846 reg. cancelled, wrecked in London, October 1845"
and that is all I ahve about her loss whcih is frustrating.
Any further information would be much appreciated.
Chris
Dear John,
This is great, a fascinating insight into the very varied life of a south
coast rail ferry.
Thank you very much for your reply which will fit into the family tree very
nicely. Hesitate to ask, but any suggestions where I might be able to
download a photo of her?
Thanks again from not so sunny Norfolk. One inch of snow and everyone here
throws up their hands in dispair. After sailing up the Blatic in -40
degrees, using steam hoses to soften mooring ropes, and with the pilot
driving across
Hello
I am researching the loss of the brig "Heroine" in January 1862 when she came
ashore on the Stoney Binks near Spurn Point when running for the Humber. I
have the details given in Henry Cheal Jnr's "Ships and Mariners of Shoreham"
but would appreciate any further info anyone may have.
Regards
John
