Capt Burrows was supposed to have been on the same ship as Brooke when he came to Singapore first in 1838 (after his father's death) and then again in 1843 and they were supposed to have fought the Bugis pirates together. The story goes that Brooke and Burrows were rewarded for their bravery with the gift of choice of the Rajah's daughter's. Although Brooke did get to become the White Rajah instead of or as well. Roger Malayer and Singapore were a british colony in those days and a lot of records should be in the National Archives in Kew..I dont know if the Japanese destroyed any records in the Archives in Malayer or Singapore but one day I intend to go there and find out as I to come from there and want a lot of records of my family if they are still available..I have not found any websites that are searchable on the net..It is cheaper for me to go to Singapore than Kew as I live in Aussie.. Good luck Mary

What was the name of the wife? Is "Nalile" the only name given for the father? Does the certificate show any residential addresses? 17. [SINGAPORE] Woodcutters in Singapore [1]
Hello All, I have just received a certificate for my husbands descendants marriage. It states that the wife's father was a woodcutter named "Nalile". Does anyone know where I would find information on woodcutters or a man by this name? I am not sure if Nalile lived in Singapore but have to start somewhere as this is where the marriage took place. Is it possible that Nalile is a Malay name? I look forward to any assistance that can be offered. Kindest regards Narelle

Thank you once again for your helpful replies, Narelle and Mary. I found several of the web sites that you have mentioned to be very interesting and have put them in my Favourites list. I don't need any further information about what happened when Singapore fell -- what I need is access to civilian BDM records in Singapore for the periods just before and just after WW2. It's clear that Singapore does not have BDM indexes as we have in Australia (and the UK) and that is a great pity, as I do not have p

I have just joined this list, and I hope that someone will be bale to help or guide me. I am interested in researching several births, deaths and marriages in Singapore. I found the web site where one applies for birth or death certificates (http://app.ica.gov.sg/serv_citizen/birth_death_reg/birth_registration.asp), but I can see no reference to BDM indexes being available online or by other means. Can anyone tell me what is available and where I can go to access the index records? Lindsay Graham Canbe
