Hello Kathy,
I have had a look for John Joseph (and variations) in a book I have on St
Andrew's Singapore BDMs but could not find him there. If you haven't
already checked out the website for BMD's in Queensland the link is :
http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/16.htm
It only covers births to 1914 and marriages and deaths to 1929. I did find
some of John and Elizabeth/Abessie/Bessy/Bessie's children registered there:
Abeatrice Maud b.1892 (a Maud Beatrice Joseph had a child John William who
died in 1910 ag

Mary and Listers:
Please share other Singapore experience/knowledge with your fellow-listers as genealogists know the "hunt" is more than just BMDs.
Tremendous gratitudes! to all who have assisted Mary on her journey.

Dear Listers,
I hope someone can help me. The above named man, my granny's cousin appears on the list of Jurors for Singapore in 1904 as a resident of the colony. He is described as an assistant, Guthrie & Company, Killiney Road, Singapore. He does not appear on a similar list in 1916.
I would like to know more of Charles. Can anyone suggest where I might obtain details of when he arrived and when he left and what sort of company was Guthrie.
Best wishes,
Mary
Excuse me for sending this to multiple mailing lists, but I'm casting the net as wide as I can in the hope of getting some useful answers.
I have a Christmas card from the 1930s bearing the insignia of the Malay States Volunteer Regiment (MSVR). It contains a photo of groups of soldiers (around 12 groups, average size about 6, all in pith helmets and shorts) apparently drilling on a parade ground. I am trying to pin down the year in which the card was likely to have been sent.
Does anyone recognise the

Dear Listers,
many thanks for those who replied to my question about Charles Meredith Henderson with links, suggestions and offers of help. All very quick and positive.
I visited Singapore and Malaysia some years ago when my son worked there and we loved our travels and the contrast between the two places. I knew nothing then of any family connection.
Best wishes and good hunting to you all.
Mary
Thanks very much, Brenda. The insignia on the card that I have is very
difficult to read, but I am pretty certain the last word is Regiment, not
Rifles. The wording is in gold lettering on a green banner, with a gold
tiger above it.
Where and when was your grandfather in the Malay States Volunteer Rifles?
I've had a look at the COFEPOW web site (very interesting) and have written
to the contact for that site to see if anyone there can help further.
As you know, Brenda, I've also been invited by wik

Looking for information on my great grandfather who arrived in Australia
Circa 1885 from either Singapore or Java. His name was John Joseph and it
is believed he may have come to Australia under the surname USOP or YUSSOP.
I believe he was born in Singapore Circa 1857 and possibly later lived in
Java prior to coming to Australia. He later is believed to have married
Elizabeth (Bessie) Williams in Mackay Queensland circa 1902 but I have not
been able to find any record of this marraige. Bessie was bo
Brenda Thanks for that website.. I was a refugee from Singapore but note
that our boat is not listed..We evacuated from Singapore on the ship Centaur
and reached Fremantle..I was able to get copies of some of the passengers on
this ship as I was interested to get the details of when we arrived in
Australia but the full list is in the Archives in Canberra..Do you think it
would be worth my while contacting the website to see if they would like
more details..

Hi Mary I have been in contact with the Singapore Archives and it is a case
you have to search in person..Unless there is someone you know who can do it
for you..I was 4th generation in Singapore so there was a lot of info I
wanted.. But the archives were good that they told me where to find stuff
but I had to wait till my brother went there on his way back from the UK to
OZ that he was able to call in and search for me and found a few things but
not really what I wanted to know,, I think a lot of re
Hello Mary,
I had a quick look in a few books I have here but could not find any
reference to Charles Meredith Henderson or Guthrie & Company.
I also looked at the A2O website
http://www.a2o.com.sg/a2o/public/search/index.html and did not find
Charles.
I did however find a lovely advertisement for Guthrie & Co there:
http://www.a2o.com.sg/a2o/public/search/index.html
and many references to land owned by the company and a map showing the land
along Battery Road part of which has a 999 year lease for Gu

I also have an interest which I am slowly following up but as a preliminary
comment may I suggest that MSVR stands for Malay States Volunteer Rifles ( my
grand father Harry Eldred Gubbins was one and because he was a keen shot I
have silver trophys with MSVR and various dates and results on them)

The Malayan Volunteer Forces,
I am Marian Mason nee Minjoot, born in Malacca. I am a descendent of Dutch
ancestors, who travelled on the VOC ships to Melakka (Malacca). We have
traced our ancestors back to the Netherlands. Bastiaan Minjoot appears to be
the progenitor of all the Minjoots who live in the Malaysia, Singapore and
Indonesia areas. Descendents have now spread worldwide to countries such as
Australia, U.K., and U.S.A. I have been progressing the Minjoot family tree
started by my relatives. Please contact me in order that we c
