Donald Lines Jacobus recorded in "Families of Ancient New Haven", 1931, that
Stephen, b 8 Jan 1715/6 in New Haven, CT, was the first child of Stephen &
Martha (Williams) Smith, born 16 Nov 1686. He was son of John & Grace
(Winston) Smith, son of George born 1618 Hertfordshire, England, died West Haven, CT
17 May 1662, & his 2nd wife, Sarah (--?--)Smith (I descend from his 1st wife
in London.) Stephen, Jr.'s wife is unnamed. George's pedigree goes deep into
the Smith and earlier Carrington line i
I would first find out which town is closer to Windam and then take that
mother's name and look for info on her which of course would be easier
then the father's name , hopefully you can find out who she married and
what children she had . Hope that helps at least a little . Would do
more but I'm very limited in what I can do . I have 5 Smith's but only
know about them from much latter years , all in CT.

I have been able to trace my SMITH line back to Stephen Smith of Windham CT
who married Mary Preston in 1736.
He died in 1760 and she in 1766.
I have been trying to find his parents.
Ancestry.com has conflicting information as to his birth.
(1) OneWorld Tree: born 28 September 1712
Killingham, Windham, CT
parents: Benjamin Smith and Sarah Peabody
(2) Millennium File:
born 8 January 1715, New Haven CT
parents: Stephen Smith and Martha Williams
BOTH of the above birth records, say he married Mary P
Quentin
thank you for the information.
BUT what I don't have is confirmation that THIS Stephen married Mary Preston
about 1771.
Two different references seem to claim that for person for her husband!
It would make my life much easier if Jacobus also said who Stephen married!

Actually, neither option gives anything beyond the first name for Stephen's
mother.
My SMITHs were in Kent CT after they left Windham, if I can be of any help
with any of your ancestors, let me know.
