1. historical causes of death [1]
I got permission to share this. It was posted on the Flanigan mailing list. In case you ever wondered why a large # of your ancestors disappeared during a certain period in history, this might help. Epidemics have always had a great influence on people - & thus influencing as well, the genealogists trying to trace them. Many cases of people disappearing from records can be traced to their dying during an epidemic or moving away from the affected area. Some of the major epidemics in the Unite

Thanks for the info, Pat. My family lost three in the space of three days in Jan. 1865. My ggggrandfather was attached to the Union Army and blamed himself for the rest of his life because he couldn't be there for his family. Charles Augustus Bouton, Charles Augustus Bouton Jr. and Deborah Clark Bouton died before their son and brother George W. P. Bouton could come home. I always wondered what the specific cause of death was. I expected it was some contagious disease. Clarissa

Very, very interesting, Pat. Thanks so much. I have often suspected that some of my direct ancestors for whom I have lots of "dates" must have died in epidemics of some sort. For instance female family members not dying in childbirth yet several sisters dying one right after the other. ....and my 3rd g-grandfather at 44 yrs old and his 20 yr old son dying within a week of each other and not at sea (they were shipbuilders and sailors). I am going to try this again. All the formatting went out of the first message and it is very difficult to read with meaning. Sorry. I got permission to share this.
