Every pioneer family kept dogs and we always had a pack of them, but I
wanted one for my very own. I had even picked out a name for him. He was to be
called "Bose" after Mr. Beagle's dog on the plains, he wasn't to be a hunter
at all, but just a big, good natured fellow that would bury bones around the
garden. I was not particular about the color though I hoped that he would be
black and tan, but he was to be big and wooly.
The boys knew that I wanted a dog, so one day Brother Adam came on a visit

Whatever you do, DON'T WRITE! It takes forever. Use FAX or e-mail (FAX
is by far preferred). For some unknown reason, snail-mail takes the very

Does anyone out there have information on the Palen Mine in Riverside
County? I am told that the mine is connected to my grandmother's family.
Her father was Matthew Palen. He is listed on the 1880 census for San
Bernardino County as a miner. According to the same census, Matthew was 45
years old, born in Ireland and lived in Colton with his wife, Anna, son and
infant daughter and his nephew, Wm. Henry also a miner and also from
Ireland.
By the 1900 census Anna (Annita) is a widow living with her four g

It was learned late yesterday that a large cache of city records was
discovered while excavating below City Hall as a part of the Loma Prieta
earthquake reenforcement retrofit. Workers unearthed a large vault that
had been cemented over after the earthquake in 1906. It was apparent
that the level below the basement had been considered a total loss. It

There was poor old Tige, his fore leg was caught in the grip of a big beaver
trap.
Father cried when he carried him back to us and told of the look that the
poor fellow had given him when he went to him through the brush and water.
The howl that Father had heard was almost has last call for help, for he was
nearly dead. His leg was mangled and eaten clear to the bone. He had tried to
gnaw himself loose and had torn the flesh into strips, but the bone still
held.
Everyone heard about it and was

I will be the first to step away from the debate over race and
responsibilities. How about if we get back to the purpose of this
list--So Cal Geneology?
I spent several hours at the Evergreen Cemetery this weekend looking
up Eliza Watkins and her husband William Stockton. They were both
there, but only she had a marker.
This situation of people being buried without markers is not new to me.
In the past 5 years I've gone to about 10 So Cal cemeteries to do
look-ups, and I have had this happen about 1/3

We are back on the trail just west of Fort Laramie. Walt
One evening we camped near an Indian village. They were friendly and came to
stand around and watch us. A number of the small boys came and seemed
interested in the games that our boys were playing, perhaps they wanted to
join in. I do not know what happened, but anyway, before long a fight had
started between my brother Jasper and an Indian boy about his own age. They
could never have quarreled for they did not speak each other's languages.
