Hello
My website, although not quite completed, is now up. The
search part isn't finished yet, and there are now loads of other
things I want to add...
Initially I've concentrated on my one-name study research of my own
surname and variations, but shortly I hope to add my other
Scottish interests.
You'll find the site at:

Grateful for feedback. Apologies to anyone who receives this twice.

Is anyone else having problems with Familysearch? I am unable to get any
results using Explorer although I can using iCab (although I can't access
the IGI as iCab doesn't support Java). In addition, I'm unable to select a
country the drop-down menu is blank.
My first thought was that it was just Familysearch undergoing one of its
periodic improvements, but since it seems to work (if only to a limited
degree) with iCab, this would appear not to be the case.
I reinstalled Explorer, to no avail. Howeve
Sadly this is just one of a host of minor problems and bugs that Sierra are being
very slow to correct. They seem to prefer to keep introducing NEW versions with
confusing names and ever increasing version numbers (apparently because that is
what sells) without correcting the known bugs or making any major new
development. I bought Generations when 'Grande Suite' first became available in
UK but still have not gained enough confidence to use it as my primary database,
though it has some excellent chart pro

Sorry about that, the date given for the event Another MAC Morning

repeat the corrected announcement:-
The Society has arranged two lectures of interest to Mac Users,
these are open to anybody at the Society address below:-

Geoffrey R. Hobbs will demonstrate the ease of using the Mac for

This is a long shot, but there was a Cotton Estate Agents in Malden, about a
mile from Kingston from about 1930 until 1990. Chris Cotton, the latest
scion of the family, went to King's College School in the 1950's and was the
first Leader of Kingston Council from about 1973 to 1974. I was his Chairman
of Finance. I do not know his whereabouts now, but he can only be 65 by now.
Could there be a connection?

Peter,
I seem to remember being able to vote in a general election whilst at
college. which was from September 1969 to June 1971. I was not 21 until
July of 1971. So it must have been between those dates. Perhaps the Act
was passed in 1968 and came into force sometime in 1969/1970. So I think
Micheal is right in his estimate.

Hello Rob Thompson,
I found your "story from the box" fascinating.
May I suggest that you have there the basis for an article for "Family
Tree Magazine" and, with some not too obvious inserts, publicity for the
Society!

Thanks for pointing this out. There is nothing in the original
documentation, which is incomplete, about this angle. The lawyers seemed
rather more concerned that Hancock was a bigamist; although from the best of
motives. Unfortunately we don't know how this case was resolved

In the logs kept by my great-great-grandfather, who was a Master in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, are references to seamen being flogged for "uncleanness". I assume it would be naive of me to interpret this offence as being a lack of personal hygiene rather than "unnatural friendship"!

Many thanks to all those who helped me with this. I agree with Arthur - it
is more interesting to work it out from the table Book of Common Prayer. I
well recall whiling away many a long and boring sermon in this way during my
church-going youth. However, I unfortunately don't have the Prayer Book to
hand these days - the Internet is easier to access in our house. A sign of
the times, I suppose.

Does anyone know where Maidenhatch, Berkshire is? Is it possibly a house?
My "Road Atlas of Britain" does not show such a place. The National
Register of Archives shows the Berkshire Record Office holding records
for the Breedon family of Bere Court, Maidenhatch, and Pangbourne
1420-1894: Berks deeds 1420-1855 and miscellaneous estate papers 1822-94.
Bere Court is a house in Pangbourne (for sale last October, I noticed for
