1. [SOMGEN] Preston County, Va/WV [1]
Hello--If anyone has any questions about the Virginia counties, I'll be glad to look in my Atlas of County Boundary Changes in Virginia 1634-1895. I'm just sorry I wasn't here when this question was first posted. You're right Beverly, Precton is not a county in either place and it probably was supposed to be Preston. In 1776, Monongalia was formed from Augusta and in 1818 Preston was form from Monongalia. And, as you probably already know, West Virginia was created in 1863. If anyone is doing a l

To the request for early marriages of "Reed" in Somerset Co. I am currently working on a vital records compilation for the county. So far there are only 5 male Reed surnames in the marriage index. See the following. In two of the cases, the name is just noted as being a witness, rather than a participant. However, the project is less than 1/2 complete. 4. RE: [SOMGEN] Routes Somerset to Ohio [1]
I've found some of my McClintocks and Pinkertons in Holmes and Warren counties around 1810. They seemed to go to Ohio to buy land in the Western Reserve, I'm not sure exactly what route was taken but probably through Wheeling or Pittsburgh. .Glenda Glenda Rae Tressler Smith tresslerg@comcast.net Researching surnames from Somerset Co., PA * Also found in Fayette Co., PA TRESSLER, GERHAR(D)T, FIRESTONE *, HARTZELL, John/Henry SMITH, McCLINTOCK *, PINKERTON, RINGER, RINGLER, WILLIAMS *, LEIGHTLITER/LIC

11. Re: [SOMGEN] Routes Somerset to Ohio [1]
Thanks for all the suggestions. I have a feeling the Reed family, who lived in Turkeyfoot Twp of Somerset Co PA came by the way of VA which is now Wheeling W VA into Ohio, probably by way of the Ohio River. Since they were in the Muskingum & Fairfield Co Ohio area. Settling in the part of Fairfield co that became Perry Co. Looks like the time was around 1816/17. The mystery is where did the Reed boys marry ? By 1820 they were married and had a couple of children, so must have married either on the way to Oh

Yes, this is most probably Preston Co, VA. Please remember that West Virginia did not become a State until about 1865. Therefore anything before that date, will be considered Virginia. meg Beverly Domer wrote: > Was there a Precton Co., Va or do you think there was typing error and it > should have been Preston Co., VA which is now WVA?
