The young generation feels nothing about family history and it is bad. Today I discover a book of the KLOPPER family at my sisters sons home, he is busy tearing out the picture to decoupage is cupboard and he by the book at the library for R1.00. In front of the book in writing stands Johannes Jacobus Kloppers 7.2.1907 6 Generation Spring 20.10.1972. Book was printed in May. I took the book home to see if there is no BREDENKAMP who married a KLOPPER. The books is going back to him and my heart in pain becau
2. Gasa trek [1]
The best available book to consult is "Many treks made Rhodesia" or the original book which is an afrikaans version "Die Pioniertrekke na Gazaland", by S P Olivier. In short, the Gazaland trek consisted of 8 different treks, namely Moodie (First) Moolman-Webster (1893) Edenburg (1894) Martin (1894, 1895) Du Plessis (1895) Kruger-Bekker (1895) Mynhardt-Utrecht (1894) Henry-Steyn (1895) The book should be available in your library. 3. Nuwejaarsrivier: near Elim [1]
Thanks April. Thats a really big help! Your location of the Nuwejaarsrivier near Elim fits the known facts, and I can now narrow down the location of the Thys Lourens farm Vogelstruiskraal. I see you say this river is near Wolvergat. I am still looking for the Van Schalkwyk family farm dating back to 1761 called Donkerhoek. It must also be in the Western Cape, perhaps Swellendam district. If you come across that name please let me know. Many thanks indeed. Kind Regards, Roy Lourens
4. Re: Vosloo [1]
Hello Mansell Some while ago you resonded to a question from me about the Vosloo family. I enclose a copy of part of your response. You referred to a book about the Vosloo family commissioned by "a prominent member of the Vosloof family" Has this book been published? Do you have any more information now about Vosloo and his doings in the early Cape? Please respond either on list or off list - I have asked a similar question on the list but somehow got terribly confused with you and Ken Markham, why I do

Henry Vineer (b 1879) married Letha Carrie Moon Children: Letha Dora (b 1902) Norman Reginald (b 1903) Raymond Cecil (b 1906) Florence Phyllis
6. Listowner Suggestion [1]
Hi All, I would like to make a suggestion if I may, which is that we all attempt to keep the list archive as unclogged and as user friendly as possible. To this end I would like to suggest that we don't send thank you messages to the list address but rather address these directly to the subscriber who we want to thank, off list. A case in point, and I am not singling any individual our for criticism, is the recent spate of messages thanking Neill Fourie for the very helpful list of Archive email addr

19. Who was John REID? [1]
Years ago Paul Jooste and his wife went on a walking trail between Oyster Bay and Cape St Francis. They came across a lonely grave. The inscription on the gravestone was difficult to read. Enquiries were made in Oyster Bay, but no one knew anything. This past December, the couple were in the area again and searched out the grave. With the help of a tube of toothpaste, they soon read the inscription: John REID, captain of the ship Cromartyshire", was from Glasgow, Scotland. He drowned, age 46, on 31 Au

Mye Goodye Cosynes, I have finally started a set of Rhodesian Geneanology pages on my "TW" website. The purpose of these pages are to provide: 1. A clear set of addresses for such research. 2. A place where special scanned photographs of around this country can be placed. Briefly, I int

23. Cape slaves [1]
Sent Sun 9 Jan 2000 Greetings All Some months ago, I watched the TV series, "Groep Sonder Grense" with great interest. In one episode, the late Prof Johan COMBRINK discussed the life and times of a Cape slave woman named Armozyn VAN DER KAAP and her brood of illegitimate children, which included (if I understood correctly) a Magdalena LEY. Can anyone tell me where I can find out more about Armozyn? If I've connected all the names and dates in the right order, Armozyn was my 7 times great-grandma! Best
24. DE LA REY [1]
I am looking for more information regarding Jacobus Hercules DE LA REY, born somewhere between 1845-1875. He was the son of Jan Daniel de la Rey (1827 George-1905 Krugersdorp, cousin of Genl Koos de la Rey) and Susanna Magdalena van Niekerk (b 1826 Uitenhage). I could not find a death notice for him in OFS or TVL. All I know about him is that he was a farmer, and his first wife was Jacomina Catharina Elizabeth WARDEN (1868 Richmond 1897 Barkley-west, OFS). She seems to have died during the birth of their
25. BDM in South Africa [1]
Hi I am new to this list, and know nothing about genealogical research in South Africa. I have just found ot that my g/g/grandparents, James DONNELLY and Ann McNAMARA, were married in South Africa, c1856. This information was obtained from the death certificate of my g/g/grandmother. The death certifcate states the place of marriage as Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, but I presume this to be Capetown. They had at least two children in South Africa (Capetown), and came to New Zealand c 1865. Is there a
