Pat Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika -- God bless Africa -- & I love singing it, often do while I clean the house. Now it's our national anthem -- with some additions from the old "Die Stem". I miss the "Woza moya" chorus in the old version, though. Coincidentally, about a year ago Showground Road (past the old site of the Rand Easter Show, now Wits West Campus) was renamed Ernest Santonga Avenue. He wrote Nkosi as a hymn & was buried in the Braamfontein cemetery opposite West Campus, so it's most appropriate. I le

8. Re: Gangibilla/Gongobillo [0.97728]
Thanks, Warrick Rosenthal's Dictionary has a brief entry on Gangelizwe (died 1884), chief of the Tembu tribe. He's said to have been charged in 1875 for killing a Galeka woman while in a fit of passion. "Confronted with a threat of war, he offered to submit to British jurisdiction, which he did in December 1875. Remained loyal to the Colonial Government, particularly during the ensuing Gaika-Galeka War of 1877-8." Doesn't sound particularly rebellious, does he? Noel Mostert's "Frontiers" makes only brief m
9. Smiths -- on a lighter note [0.97728]
All this talk about different kinds of smiths & your lament has reminded me of how many surnames are occupational in origin. At least Smith speaks of an honest, useful trade. My own surname, Brady, according to some sources, means "mad" -- my friends tend to agree! Can't imagine what my earliest ancestors were like to have earned a name like that! 10. Drakenstein [0.97728]
Dear Fellow Listers, Some times there can be some confusion when it comes to places in the Cape. eg Drakenstein - this use to be a sub-district of the District of Stellenbosch. Now on the other hand there were both little townships of Stellenbosch as well as Drakenstein. Someone can for example have had a farm in Wagenmakersvalleij (present Wellington area) and yet the farm was still part of the sub-district of Drakenstein. Therefore the stamvader ERASMUS who had a farm Groenkloof in Wagenmakersvalleij w

My wife, Alice Jean Berning, was born in Cape Town. Her father was John Leopold von Molkte Berning. He had one brother, Claude ........ Berning who had an only son Michael Berning, still living in South Africa. The von Moklte part is intriguing and could well be a family name with German origins, as indeed Berning has. 21. RE: grofsmid [0.97728]
Hello Cliff Why would your father have been called "Mazambane" - "Potato?" Come to think of it, though, the name has a pretty ring to it. Maybe he was a potato farmer? On the subject of ox-shoes. Yes, oxen were sometimes shoed, and the shoes were comma-shaped. The oxen did wear their hooves through on long treks. Whether the Voortrekker oxen were shoed, I can't say, though. Transport oxen were probably shoed as a matter of routine. Concerning blacksmiths on trek... The Trekkers did seem to have some that

24. Lilyan/Lillian -Given name alternatives [0.97728]
Hi Listers I wonder if anyone has an idea where the given name Lilyan (as apposed Lillian) could have come from (ie Irish, Scotch, Welsh or elsewhere. I have just discovered that a great niece my mother called Lillian E Harding was actually baptised as Lilyan Elizabeth Harding in Capetown on 27-3-1878. Knowing the possible overseas source of this spelling or variation may just help get further back. Another given name I am pondering over is Bessie (or Bess) of which I have a few
