1. [ZA] What an infection. [1]
Masses of infected mail coming through Bugbear virus or something it said. I am checking this for free before I send to you. But it is using Boer War list, ZA list and Brit Immigrants. With names which could be genuine but with attachments which makes for immediate suspicion. Nortons has quarantined them for me. But they are very annoying. Some 30 today alone!!!! Pat

4. [ZA] RENDELL [1]
Hi List, Not for me, but for a genie friend who does not own a computer. When in Cape Town recently I looked up the archives for ALFRED HUGH RENDELL ESTATE PAPERS My friend was thrilled, but was really looking for Alfred's brother, ERNEST GEOFFREY RENDELL and his wife ELLEN RENDELL. A NAAIRS search has only revealed a Mortgage Bond for this man in 1906 but no death notice. I have searched Archives other than Cape Town without joy. My friend insists that this man did not leave S.A. (He should know be

6. [ZA] Vergelegen [1]
To our listers, I apologize for inadvertently sending an enriched message to the List. Here it is plain: Dear Lynn and Midge, Thank you for a brief history on the illustrious "Versailles of Southern Africa". Michiel Otto my ancestor became owner of Vergelegen through his marriage to Barend Gildenhuys' widow. Too bad the family did not hold on to the property, perhaps we would be enjoying tea under one of those old oak trees, purported to have been planted by Adriaan van der Stel himself. Regards, Vince
7. Re: [ZA] McCabe [1]
Thanks Dave for your interesting snippets on the Mc Cabe family. I really appreciate your help. By the way, you wouldn't happen to be married to Anita with the nightingale voice? I will never forget her particularly beautiful and goosebump-inducing rendition of "The Spinning Wheel" (accompanied by harpist, Cobie du Plessis) at a concert held at the Playhouse in Somerset West during the late 1980's. So enchanted was I with her magnificent singing that I begged her for a copy of the sheet music- which she gr
8. Re: [ZA] Church Records Index ? [1]
1. The Cory Library website (www.ru.ac.za/library/cory/) has a detailed catalogue of their holdings of church registers and records. 2. In August, 1989, the C.P.S.A. Register Listing was published, giving the location of most of the Anglican registers in South Africa. 3. I know that many of the Anglican registers are kept at the William Cullen Library of Wits University but, having just had a look at their website, I could not find any mention of them. with best wishes William William Jervoi
9. Re: [ZA] could anyone help? [1]
Thank you so much for this Margaret. I realised this had to be mine as I know Kate French was my gran's mother - I just wish I knew where to go to figure when she and John French came to South Africa. Were they already married, or is her death notice correct when it gives Port Elizabeth as the place of marriage? My gran was only born in 1882, and I have her details, its these two that elude me. I am going to have find an Irish source to help me. I would also love to know where to go to get information/

11. RE: [RE: [[ZA] RE: St. Mark's Mission station?]] [1]
Thanks Mike, As you say, it doesn't answer my questions but the two newspaper accounts and the family legend are both interesting and give one pause to think about the sheer courage and tenacity of those early settlers/traders. Thank you for sharing those accounts with us. 14. [ZA] Pietermaritzburg and Catholic roots [1]
The first Roman Catholic missionaries arrived in Natal 150 years ago. In April 1852, Bishop Jean Francois ALLARD, accompanied by three young priests and a lay brother, arrived in Pietermaritzburg. They belonged to the French religious order, Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Only one of them could speak English. The community that they served spoke mostly English (parishioners were mainly Irish soldiers). The first Catholic church in Pietermaritzburg, St Mary's, was built in Loop Street. The first mass was cele
15. Re: [ZA] Bugbear is making me cross [1]
I have had the disconcerting messages which are actually addressed to me and about my own subjects but still break off half way and have attachments which I certainly would never open - this could easily lead those unaware astray. Maybe we should get President Bush on the job of eradicating Bugbear? Go well! 18. [ZA] Obituary [1]
Matshaya MATHIVHA has died in Thohoyandou in Limpopo at the age of 80. He was the leader and chief historian of the 500 000 black Jews of Southern Africa, known as the Lemba. He was known to many by his clan name Mushavhi. He was born in a small village in Venda on 24 December 1921. His father was a traditional healer and subsistence farmer who sold his last donkey, which he used for ploughing the fields, to pay the exam fee so that his son could write his Std 6 exams. MATHIVHA inherited his father's rever

Hallo Dave I will be visiting the Archives in Pretoria shortly and would be happy to look up the two files for you. I notice from your e-mail address that you are in Stellenbosch ? - do you occasionally get to the Cape Archives to do reciprocal lookups? Re the Restitution of Conjugal Rights - it would appear to me that it is normal for a "Restitution Order" to be granted before a final Decree of Divorce is issued. In practice it means that the Plaintiff submits a declaration stating the circumstances of t
20. Re: [ZA] English lesson [1]
Hello Anne, I believe you are correct - the 'ed ending is very American while the other is the way I would write it and while I am not an English teacher, I am a pedantic person when it comes to my language! bye mary Hi folks, Slightly off topic, but need advice for a genealogy article: Are there any English language teachers here? I need to clarify whether one writes "a lesson he learned the hard way" or "a lesson he learnt the hard way". The first one seems to be the North American use but I'm sure
21. Re: [ZA] Searching for JARVIS [1]
Dear Peter I'm not much good at answering your questions. But eyes popped oiut of head when I saw Totty Street on your 1881 Census. that's where my grandmother's family hung out. She was there in 1891, and her first child was born in 1905 at 52 Totty St. I have the 1891 and 1901 census for London if you want anything checked. Just imagine - all our Settler ancestors were probably sleeping on your ancestor's mattresses! However, I see you are in England. At the rRecords Office in London there are books with

Hi All, The following Archive CD Book set has just been released. Before posting to the list, I sought and received permission from the list owner prior to posting this message, given the commercial nature (albeit from a non-profit organisation) of the product. I have no commercial interest in the product or Archive CD Books other than as a supporter of their fine quality work. I am sure many will find the following product of interest or as a valuable reference in their research. ***********************
