Hi Jeremy, Although I see no Lloyds on the document you very kindly sent me...many thanks...It is interesting to see the various Liverpool agents and brokers listed. My lloyds moved from Middlesex,London to pre 1842 Montevideo and then between 1847-9 they went on to Buenos Aires until approx 1862 before settling back in England at Liverpool. The father of the family was a shipsteward by the time he appears on UK census in 1871 Liverpool. He had 3 children in Montevideo and 2 in Buenos aires (possibly mo

5. [SOUTH-AM-EMI-L] SEARCHES INVOLVING PERU/BOLIVIA [1]
Although I do not know or have not heard the name Helsby, it is nice to know that there are some people out there who have similar interests! As for the mines of Bolivia, I, too am seeking info on the old mines. My Italian grandfather, Enrique La Placa, whose daughter married my grandfather, Frank Edward FAWCETT in Bolivia, (my grandfather was with the Antofagasta/Chile Railway), went out to Bolivia as a mining engineer for either San Jose mine or Potosi mine between 1896 and 1905. My answer is "Yes, probably, but it may be difficult". In his paper, Martinic cites various primary sources -- none, however, at the level of individual immigrants. You might start by checking the parish registers for El Sagrado Corazon (1866-1928), and the registers of the Registro Civil (1885-1932), both of whi

For those of you interested in the Monte Grande Colony I took this extract recently.:- Extract from Casa Familia - spatial biographies in the 19 th century PhD Thesis by Diana Hernando. University of California. 1973. The Lawrie Family (pages 166-249 inc). The thesis contains considerable details of the lives and activities of three generations of this family starting with James Lawrie who emigrated to Argentina as a member of the Scottish Monte Grande colony. Further to earlier references to burials at the British Cemetery at Para (drawing on PRO file FO 743/13), further information emerges from some documents on file FO 743/12 (capitalisation of surnames and [...] is editorial). There are many inconsistencies here and with the other list - but the following is as written. a) note of 20 Mar 1855 from Para Hospital announcing the death of a pauper British subject, Peter O'NEIL. b) typed note dated 1905 of tombs in the English Cemetary: James CAMPBELL, Archibal

I have come across the following information in Mulhall M. G. and E. T, 'Handbook of the River Plate Republics', 1869. It was giving useful information for would-be settlers from Britain in the River Plate republics in the late 1860s and 1870s. 'A list of the businesses in Buenos Aires owned by the British there'. James Dodds' monumental account of the establishment of the Scottish community in Argentina during the 19th century includes a list of the names of the 117 subscribers to the building fund for the first Scots church built in Buenos Aires. It forms a useful roll call of Scottish immigrants of the period of the 1830s. If anyone would like a copy of the file in RTF format (text format can alternatively be sent if requested) send me an email at jeremy@howat.net .

At Rio de Janeiro on 26 May 1836 "sixty six British Residents comprising, with very few exceptions, the whole of the British mercantile body in this City" presented a memorial to the British Chargi d'Affaires (William Gore Ouseley) concerning the appointment of the British Chaplain. Earlier, the British residents had signed a petition on 23 Jan 1836 seeking representations against a new police power to require a "permission to reside" against payment of a charge and under threat of imprisonment, contrary

18. [SOUTH-AM-EMI-L] British Immigrants: Magallanes, Chile (1870 to 1890) [1]
Mateo Martinic (Instituto de la Patagonia) has made a detailed study of the various immigrant groups among the early population of the Magallanes territory, Chile. During the period 1870-1890, Swiss and British arrivals were the most numerous, accounting for almost half of all immigrants (141 and 137 respectively, from a total of 598). His list of British immigrants is given below. Surnames are arranged alphabetically, and "British" first names have been translated. In some cases, occupation and/or the nam

I have come across the information below in Mulhall M. G. and E. T, 'Handbook of the River Plate Republics', 1869. It gives useful information for would-be settlers in the River Plate republics in the 1870s, and for today's historians. Argentine weights and measurements of distance and ground area: 1 arroba is equivalent to 25 lbs 4 arrobas equals 1 quintal 20 quintales equals 1 ton 80 arrobas equals 1 ton 2000 lbs is equivalent to 1 ton (therefore a Spanish ton is 240 lbs less than an English ton) 1 var

Hi Margie and others I am actually looking for the name HELSBY in Peru and Bolivia, probably no descendants there now, but you never know. Three Helsby brothers were well known photographers in South America in the period circa 1840 to 1860, doing the Daguerrotype photos. They eventually set up a studio in Valparaiso but had photographed Peru and Bolivia, perhaps some of the earliest photos ever taken of Bolivia. I also believe a Helsby (not too sure if one of the three brothers) had interests in silver

Hello Graeme, Yes I am still subscribing to the list, but have come out of retirement and will continue to be pressed for time for a few months. I know from contemporary correspondence that Jane Robson was married to my great great uncle James Tweedie RAMSAY (not RAMSEY) but I too have two candidates for which Jane Robson! The most likely would have been only 13 at marriage! All this from unreliable memory, but I will get back to doing some proper research as soon as I can. regards, Arthur Thomson. Graeme

25. [SOUTH-AM-EMI-L] British Cemetery, Pará (pt 1) [1]
There are few records of the British community in Para, Brazil. A British Cemetery was established there in about 1815 and the last burial is believed to have been in 1885 - it seems to have been used also by other foreign Protestants in the city, and even by some Jews. In a slim file in the UK Public Record Office (FO 743/13) are some papers about the cemetery - mainly raising money in 1908 for restoration work - but also a little sheaf of pencil notes which appears to list some of the burials there, p
