Arthur,
I think LOLA's address is Viamonte 976 20 Piso in B.A. You may also find it
in Librerma Rodrmguez (Sarmiento 835 or Florida 377). If not, try in the
Buenos Aires Herald, where Graham-Yooll is their sr. editor. Good luck...
and enjoy the jacarandas!

Hello Listers,
I wonder if anyone of you has reference sources, bibliography or websites on
a typical ship journey from Britain to Argentina during the 1840/50's. My
interests are: types/description of ships, ports of embarking and calls,
duration, cost of passage tickets, crew, onboard life (eg., food), weather,
dangers, etc. I am not interested in a ship in particular, but general
descriptions. Thank you very much for your cooperation,

Hi Maxine:
I happen to descend from some people you mention in your books and was wondering whether you could help me a bit.
1) Have you sorted out whether there was only one Thwaites, indistinctively named Joshua/Joseph (acc. to Coghlan-Richieri), or if there was another one named John (acc. to Fernandez Gsmez).
2) Do you have any information with respect to any Ridleys in addition to your mentioning of a Mrs. Ridley, born in England, 40, buried on 21 June 1833 (643. N: 563 of the list in "El pequeqo c

Further to my letter to the List sent on 11 November, thanks to Maxine, I
can clarify the doubtful signatures listed.
The two illegible signatures were for: J. Atherton and Edmund Cranwell.
I misread other signatures, as follows:
For Alfred Bowker, read Alfred Barber;
For H.C. Smillie, read H.C. Smith;
For Thomas Douthal, read George Dowse;
For Terrence Moore, read Terence Moore;
For Jorge Bill, read Jorge Bell.
I am happy to send an .rtf file (or .txt file if you prefer) with the text

I noticed your e-mail to the list and in particular the name WATSON, I have

Rachels parents were Henry Watson and Rachel Rieke (Ricke?) Watson, Rachel

I have found an original letter in the Public Record Office (FO118/145,
pages 49-51) written in 1849 to the British Minister Plenipotentiary to the
Argentine Government. It was signed by 74 British merchants of Buenos Aires
and took the form of a loyal address directed to the then Argentine
President, Brigadier General Don Juan Manuel de Rosas, and expressing their
gratitude for his protection and kindness.
Please contact me jeremy@howat.net if you would like a full transcript of
the letter and signatures.

Many Many thanks for this reply, I will admit to total stupudity as a
geanealogist for not looking Ellis Island, the last time I tried it it was
offline for awhile or maybe I saw it mentioned in a bulletin.
Of course what intrigued me was where was he a soldier? as daughter married
a scotch baronet who was in the Dragoons, what I have been trying to find is
were they stationed there, was SAMPSON in the Dragoons.
Can you tell me where to read a bit about the history of Argentina and when

You are stunning, Maxine.
Benjamin Henderson died 11 April 1892 at Trentham, Victoria, Australia. The informant said he was 92 years old, but 91 and 11 months may be enough for this informant to say 92.
Very likely born 27 May 1800 Caithness, Scotland, but this is yet to be proven, Maxine. But only 2 births in the whole of Scotland for his name and right birthyear on the Mormon IGI, and both are in Caithness.
Plus the only 2 in 1799 for Benjamin Henderson, are als
Dear Santiago:
I haven4t still come across Ridley, but I might any minute.
Regarding Thwaites, there were three brothers who came to Buenos Aires: John
(the famous one of La Representacisn de los Hacendados); Josua, who is
probably your ancestor amd arrived in 1816, and Joseph.
Regards.

With this issue we commence a series of articles dealing with
the export markets in those countries where before the war Germany
enjoyed a considerable trade. She is, of course, still free to
trade so far as she is able with neighbouring countries but the

I go to Argentina next Sunday and do not wish to return without at least 2

Can anyone on this list help? My Great-Grandfather Charles Daniel was an engineer for ? railway in Argentina. He sailed there between 1884-1887 ( I am still waiting for a copy of my Grandfathers birth certificate to get the exact year), when the new baby Arthur Albert was born. It is believed that he was based at Bahia Blanca and that he was quite senior. He had his own Hacienda, with stables.His children attended the local Spanish school, not the English one and several of them died during the smallpox epi
Hi Maxine
Thanks for the reply.
Thomas Columbus Helsby married Patience Hazell circa 1853, he died 13th May
1879 in Callas Peru age 57. Their son was Alfredo Helsby the well known

Patience Hazell, but she possibly died in 1879.
