Hello Humphrey.
Saw your E-mail, do you still have access to that film?? I am looking for
HELSBY in Valpariso around the 1800's. There were a few? Helsby brothers who
were photographers, I believe in a place called Retrovista (spelling?).
Later progeny included an Alfredo Helsby who became a famous artist in
Chile. His father may have been Thomas Columbus Helsby but I am still
searching for any information on the family in Chile.
Any clues would be appreciated.

British Births should have been registered by parents with British Embassy.
They will also be in the Church (Protestant Register). Birth then
automatically registered in UK. They will also have a Chilean Birth Cert.

Hello again.
Is anyone interested in the LAMBERT family? I have two books by
members: "Sweet Waters" by C.J. Lambert and "We Farmed a Desert" by E.B.
Herivel (sister of C.J. Lambert). Little, genealogically for anyone
else: the only English names I encountered are those of Guy WODEHOUSE
and Bill MILLIE.

To Humphrey,
Thanks for the response. Did it take much translating to be able to read the Spanish/Portuguese? of the Chilean records? Or was it in English? I have considered ordering the relevant microfilms but, not knowing if I would be able to read them in the first place, haven't so far. I would also like to rather search every other avenue before I resort to trying to find the WILLIAMSON/COCKBAIN records there. I am currently awaiting info from somebody on the Fife-list (from where the WILLIAMSONs

hi, everyone,
I am also looking for information related to migrants from Great Britain in Valparaiso, Chile. To Lizzane Cockbain, I know that the company Williamson Balfour is still in Chile managing Coca Cola. They also had a branch in the fifties on Easter Island dealing with sheep.
A question for Humphrey: How can you access LDS family history?
I am looking for Gill-Stratford and Hardy families that arrived in Valparaiso after 1850 from Great Britan. I know that the Gill family had a printing company

Hello Alvaro,
Any Family History Centre of the Mormon Church will have the catalogue; it is also available, at cost, as a CD from the Church, or you can find it "on-line" at the Church's genealogy site.

Hello Lizanne,
I am not a member of the Church but a keen user of its resources. The church records are in Spanish but perhaps you can pick out the names that interest you and have the relevant section translated by a friend. For example, this is an entry that interested me (in quite legible handwriting):
"En quince de noviembre de mil ochocientos cuarenta y cautro (i.e. 15 Nov 1844) con dispensa de proclamas presencie el matrimonio de Dn Gualtiero Grundy (Mr Walter Grundy) natural de Inglaterra y reside
Hi all,
I'm a newcomer to the list. I'm researching my Great Great
Grandfather John (Juan) Simpson HAY and his wife Catherine Sutherland BARNETT

very interested to know if anyone has a listing of their marriage. As far as
I know they were married in 1870, very probably at St Barthomews church as
that's where their children were baptised. I thought this might provide a key
to John's work which I'm particularly interes

Hi
I have been interestd in the recent queries re: Valpariso Chile.
My paternal great great grandparents Robert Wylie & Jane Ross were
supposedly emigrating from Scotland to the United States. They were
shipwrecked and the rescuing vessel took them to Valpariso Chile where they
remained and their son William Washington Wylie was born May 17, 1860.
The list of British in Chile in 1903 includes > Wylie Juan, Cutlery

Hi Humphrey,
Thanks for your help. I have made a note of the book by your aunt and will
keep an eye open for it. What kind of a book was it? It sounds like
non-fiction. Subject? So that I can ask around. Enjoy your trip to SLC
and have fun in the FHL, I really envy you.

I have been looking for the marriage of THOMAS SILLITOE and SARAH ROBINSON,
both born in Cheshire around 1800, for quite some time, and the dates of
their children born in Buenos Aires.
I wrote to the Rector of St John's Cathedral (Anglican Diocese) in Buenos
Aires and received an answer from him this week with the following
information. I thought I would post it to the list in case any
descendants of theirs in the future were looking for them.

Hi Lizanne.
If you find a source of information on Chile and the Valpariso area, please
let me know. I am trying to trace HELSBY family who lived in Chile in the
early to mid 1800's. They originally came from Cheshire and some went back
there and to Wales just before the 1881 census. Some had been born in Chile
and Buenos Aires, a Thomas Columbus Helsby stayed in Chile, and I believe
had a son Alfredo who became a well known Chilean painter. I have seen
copies of some of his works on a web site of the Chil
