I agree! Let's have a Chat Club! Genealogy is about far more than just names and dates, and sharing memories and family stories is a great way to get a picture of the people who are our ancestors.
It does need to be separate from this mailing list. I've been on a very relaxed list, where posts relating in any way to life in the area are allowed (and sometimes they wander waay off topic) - it was just fascinating! However, the "serious" genealogists did not like it. My problem was that it has an en

Well, how would we do this? Just toss out an idea
and see who responds? Or would that tie up
the "digitised waves"? We did discuss what being _Burgher_
meant awhile back.
Fazil, maybe you could guide us on this? Don't want to violate rules.
What I find in talking about Lanka is that we usually find
out: "Oh, you're related to him/her?". Chatting seems to help
the searching. Greetings to all from a very cold Netherlands.

I agree with Ewan, it was so nice to know everyone is
alive & well out there ;-P Would we be interested in talking
about other issues, as well as our common interests in Ceylon
& ancestery? I think that our common interest probably
binds us in other ways that I'd love to hear about.
Maybe we could form our own Sri Lanka Rootsweb chat?
Just a thought.

Dear Malcolm,
I wish to extend my sincere sympathy to you, your family and all the people of Sri Lanka following the recent disaster in your country and others in the region. I sincerely hope that you and your family and friends are all safe and well.
The people of Australia are extremely sympathici and everyone is contributing to raise monies for disaster relief to an extent that I have never before experienced.
I had been planning a visit to Sri Lanka in January but these plans have now been postponed
Great idea, Liz. Will talk to the forum guru's and see how e can set up
a chat room for us forum members to chat and keep u posted. Else we
could set up a private chat room using any of the many service providers
and use it too. Lets put on our thinking caps and see how we can make it
work. Of course those having Hotmail or Yahoo or AOL access do hv the
privilege of chatting online using the various Instant messaging
Services provided by these services. I do agree that we need an unique

Dear All
After the recent flurry of activity I thought I would keep the momentum going by reposting my Sri Lankan interests. My great grandfather was Frederick Sanders LAKEMAN who was born in Ceylon in 1856, son of Stephen LAKEMAN, Coffee Planter, and Emma Charlotte Sanders. He married Amy Louisa BARKER in Colombo on 14th August 1884. They had 7 children, two of whom were born in Ceylon; Winifred LAKEMAN born 1885 and Harold Leslie LAKEMAN born on 28th December 1888.
Frederick was also a coffee planter a
A chat club sounds a good idea, especially if it helps us pass on
information about sources for Births, Marriages and Deaths and other
information relating to genealogy.

OK. Now we are all bright and bushy tailed, has anyone a native ancestor of Ceylon, born Trincomalee, c.1820 and been able to access records. Caste, unknown, mother's name unknown which seems to be necessary for certs.

To Malcolm, Fazli and others so sadly affected by this shocking Tsunami,
please accept my heartfelt sorrow for our people
I know that like you, I am likely to also have descendants of my Sri Lankan
ancestors who have been affected.
And there is a massive push for donations wherever I go, all aimed at
assisting those devastated areas..
My prayers are with you..
Best Wishes for a quick recovery for the Jewel of the Indian Ocean.

The only positive thing was that it showed people still have an interest in
this list despite its low activity level.

Hi, I am trying to trace information regarding a relative who lived in Sri
Lanka in I think the 1800's. His name was Poonamalee Rajahgopal SLATER.

First, people who detest spam would not pay any attentnio to "Gods
Messenger" a source of spam infiltrating this and I suspect many other
lists.
But, this is the price we pay for being on a list. Anyone can post,
including spammers. To prevent this, the list would have to change, and
allow only posting by members from a web page.
The list is small enought and short enough, that it would probably not
survive such measures.
I see that the post caused much more than the usual activity.

MEET JESUS!
One of the greatest misconceptions is that good people go to heaven,
and bad people go to hell. "This is not taught in the Bible!"
Rather, those who believe in the Lord Jesus will be found in heaven and
those who do not are condemned even now.
It is forgiven people who will spend eternity with the Lord enjoying the
pleasures of eternal life.
Consider the words of The Lord Jesus recorded in the book of John.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
