FYI - From Ilene Murray
Stay tuned tomorrow to KWMU (90.7) from 11 to noon. (Monday I think) They
are doing an
hour on genealogy. Mardean Steinmetz from the Family History Library,
either Christie Hughes or Joyce Loving (if she's back in town), Ed and I
are going to be on. I forgot to tell all of you on Saturday, so feel
free to pass the word on. It was arranged by Betty Landow, our JGS
publicity chair, but we'll be talking about all St. Louis genealogical
resources.

Vernon,
I looked around and it looks like there was a utility written back around
1993 by the LDS, that would convert a CSV or fixed file to a GEDCOM. It was
named FIX2GED, but I have done some searches and have not had any luck
finding the program.

Wayne,
From the subject line, it looks like you are getting the Digest mode, so
there would be attachments for the e-mail for that day. If you are using
Outlook Express 6.0, and have not changed the default settings, then it will
not allow attachments. To check or change this, go to the "Tools" menu and
select "Options", then select the "Security" tab and look to see if the "Do
not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a
virus". If this is checked, then no attachments will be all
I bit the bullet and played around with some sample GEDCOM files to see how
I can get basic information into GEDCOM. Basic lists of names with simple
dates and locations are not too hard using the capabilities of spreadsheets
to construct special text, but has been suggested, anything more complex
gets to be too much trouble.
I had heard that a program called LDS companion will do this, but I asked
the author and he said it would not.

Hi,
It seems like every message that I get lately from the society has an error
msg that says "OE has removed access to an unsafe attachment".
Do you think this is caused by a security setting on my Outlook Express or
really something wrong with the attachment? I don't receive this message on
any other of the 30 to 40 emails I receive daily.
Thanks,
Wayne

FYI,
This is just a friendly reminder that the August CIG Meeting will be held at
the St. Louis Genealogical Societies Office this month, and NOT at the
County Library. The address of the office is #4 Sunnen Dr. Suite 140.
This months meeting will be a demonstration of the new genealogy program
"RootsMagic", presented by Ted Steele.
As usual, we will have a chat time starting at 7pm and Ted's presentation
will be at 7:30.
This is the first CIG meeting at the office facilities, so if you do not

Hi,
The last several messages from the society I have not been able to read. I
get an error message that "OE has removed an unsafe attachment".
Do you think something is set wrong on my end or the attachments really are
unsafe?
Thanks, Wayne

Folks,
At a recent Society meeting, either the general meeting or the CIG
meeting, someone was asking about digital cameras. Another question that
seems to recur in the CIG meetings is about scanners.
FWIW, the May 2003 issue of Consumer Reports magazine has several
articles on digital matters - including reviews and ratings of digital
cameras and scanners.
Enjoy.

Thanks so much. The online soundex systems, were only giving the soundex
code,
but now I see that rootsweb has a translator also, which gives the
variations in spelling.
Thanks so much.

Hi Lroman:
There are two excellent online databases here:
Missouri Birth and Death Databases, pre-1910
If there is a death certificate, you should also be able to download it at
this site.
http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/birthdeath/
Also, you should check the St. Louis probate records. Early records are
downloadable here:
St. Louis Probate Court Digitization Project, 1801-19000:
http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/stlprobate/
Both of these sites are TERRIFIC resources.

Hi John,
Regarding the cost of Ancestry -
I bought a copy of Family Tree Maker for $30 which came with a three month subscription to Ancentry - to continue the subcription for a full year the cost would have been $159 so I cancelled. I was at Office Max two nights ago and saw that they have a more expensive version of FTM with a one year subscription for a total of $80. I was so amazed at this that I had my husband check the box to be sure that I wasn't seeing things.
Can you guess how I'm

Just a reminder to the group that both St. Louis County Library

Jean,
Glad this helped! It's a wonderful resource. My husband's ancestor's records
were from the 1870s.
I was able to download the entire probate file, page by page, and print it.
The scanned page is probably as clear as the original. I downloaded 40 or so
pages for my husband's ancestor. I already had a copy of the will, but the
estate packet had so much more information in it.
I'm in Washington, DC this week, so I can't check my books at home, but I
would call St. Louis City Hall and ask. If you get so
