1. [STEER] George Steer War Correspondent [1]
An article in the magazine 'The Oldie' refers to a George STEER,a South African war correspondent sending dispatches to the TIMES. A book by Nicholas Rankin entitled "'Telegram from Guernica' The Extraordinary life of George Steer, War Correspondent" has been published this month by Faber & Faber. Although I have he same name I am not related. I will ask my local library to obtain a copy.

Michael, Many thanks, http://www.hmc.gov.uk/nra/nra2.htm looks like a useful index site which I hadn't used before. I tried searching for names from some of my research projects and found some interesting results, there were also other Steers: Personal name and description search for: steer Steer, Francis William (1912-1978) Archivist Antiquary and Herald (9) Steer, George Lowther (1909-1944) Journalist and Author (2) Steer, Philip (d 1871) Painter (1) Steer, Philip Wilson (1860-1942) Painter (4) Steer,

An administrator error. I get a number of procedural questions and normally reply off-list so has not to fill peoples in-boxes with unnecessary messages, I slipped up in this case; my apologies. I prefer to let people tell their own stories when they wish so apologies to Don for raising his query for him. John in Dorking, England
8. Re: [STEER] George Steer War Correspondent [1]
George, Thanks for pointing out this forthcoming publication, I've seen George Steer's name appearing before when searching the web so it will be interesting to learn more about him and possibly track down his origins. I searched for "George Steer" as that is my father's name but I'm not blood related to George the War Correspondent (I don't think), however, I might be "otherwise" related having served my time in "Fleet Street". George's story will no doubt be interesting. John in Dorking, England ----

14. [STEER] List Newletter [1]
Dear List, I will be sending out regular newsletters in future to keep you informed about the progress of the Steer database and the questions raised about particular individuals and families. I'm not making the commitment to publishing a newsletter every fortnight, say, but I'll endeavour to do so, a lot depends on how much there is to say. I'm working on the basis that a primary role of the list is to share information and to be able to respond to peoples' specific questions - the more information we h
15. Re: [STEER] List Newletter & Database [1]
Stephen's question is a good one. >do you have a preferred format > for submissions ? I want to encourage submissions but am well aware that the more a preferred format is specified then the more difficult it can make the task for each of you which may only serve as a disincentive. So I'll keep this as simple as possible. I'll accept whatever information people have to offer in whatever format is convenient for them, including GED files and if people have spreadsheet or database tables these will be fin

17. [STEER] Starting on a STEER Maririage Index [1]
An ambitious but worthwhile task is to start the STEER marriage index, which can then have further additions as more marriages are found. I'm going to begin with those on the IGI for England and then work round the globe. I've found that the best way to gather the information is to download the GED files county by county, which is a bit laborious but worth it, any offers of help will be appreciated. I would also be grateful for any marriages or lists of marriages that any of you have, even if they are on
18. Re: [STEER] From the DEVON List [1]
I was thinking the other day whether we could be exhausting our supply of useful websites, which was a completely silly thought given that more and more information becomes available on the internet. I see on this site that there is a Dorking Steer. The challenge is to get this information into our database where it will have more value when linked into the families. Many thanks, keep the information following. John in Dorking, England ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Steer"

Hello Don, Thanks for letting me know that you've experienced some problems getting your message to the STEER List. I can confirm that you are subscribed to the list but that no messages from you have been received. Can I check the address that you're attempting as STEER~L@rootsweb.com is nearly correct but for one small detail, the character after the word STEER should be a dash (if you had tried this address you should have received an error message). Could you try STEER-L@rootsweb.com and let me know

Don, > Her father was George Bates Steere b. Nov 1829, Nuthurst, Sussex and mother > was Eliz. Goldsmith b. 1837 at Horsham, Sussex. I'm replying on-list because thanks are due to Steve Steere and Jack for earlier 2002 postings. Steve listed Nuthurst census entries 1841-1891 and added "I hope someone will benefit from this information". Jack listed Sussex baptisms and marriages; there are also references in the 1901 census.
