Hello Jack,
Sometimes I do these messages late at night, when my brain isn't functioning
as it should :-)
Point 1. Yes, that is the date of the license, my mistake is assuming that
was also the date of the marriage.
Point 2.
Fanny & family are definitely there on the True Briton in December 1867, and
in fact have the same fiche & page references as Louisa. I must have got a
bit hooked on that 1873 date. My apologies. The B on the index indicates
whether or not the ship sailed from a British port. So

I've been off the list for 10 weeks and have missed all the messages during that time. I wonder if there have been any exciting new revelations about Jasper (bap. March 30 1760 - died January 1845) or his family? Information would be appreciated.
Thank you. Bob Steer. Hamilton. Vic. Australia.

Dear Margaret,
Many thanks for your reply. I do not know how I missed seeing her on the 1891 census!
I will have a look for her daughter on earlier censuses as you suggested and see what I can find.
All her siblings are mentioned on the IGI site which I have found very helpful for Steers born abroad. Somehow she is not mentioned.
With my thanks,
William Highley

I have a will indexed for a Thomas STEERS, a lighterman of Bermondsey St Mary Magdalene, Surrey, dated 23.12.1757 was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury - reference PROB 11/834
Do you know anything about Thomas? Is he one of yours?

Try my web-site for information on the relationships. They are part of the
family of the Derbyshire-Yorkshire Steers. However note that the earlier
Derbyshire links are not proven. The earliest proven link is Robert of
Edensor whose son William settled in Yorkshire.

Jack and others,
Have you had a look at this one? Quite a few STEER entries, I wondered if
the
Thomas STEER, 1855, was the same Thomas STEER, Naval Pensioner we were
looking for a week or so ago.

A few trees have been mentioned on the list in the recent past. These are the ones of which I am aware. Does anyone know of any others they would like to share with us all?

Hi everyone,
Just had to tell you about my exciting find.
Ever since I started researching this STEER family I've been puzzled as to
how and why a 14 year old would come to Australia apparently on her own.
There was no apparent connection to anyone else on the ship.
Recently I was given a set of Victorian BDM CD's, and have been amusing
myself playing around with them. Today I found the death of another of the
children of John STEER and Francis Caroline QUAIT, Fanny Phillips. From
there I went to th
I think that this is a branch of Heather's Rotherhithe lightermen. I believe that she is descended from John baptised 1781.
Can anyone add anything to this segment please?
The 1861 census returns would be a really helpful addition.

He was described as a skilled labourer of 44 Victory Street, aged 24 and she was aged 33 of the same address. I do not know if either had been married before.
Francis William's father was Thomas STEER (naval pensioner) and the witnesses were Thomas STEER and Mary Ann STEER
It is possible that Thomas originated in Kent, but I have no firm evidence of that.

Deidre and Helen,
What I have on this family is below, but the lack of detail and of original
sources means that there are more questions than answers. It may be possible
to go further, but not without some more background information.
Three possibilities for Richard are:-

Judy's right, what was a little local difficulty has become bigger and I've
been dragged out of early retirement to assist.
I'm reading what's happening on the list and hope to give full attention
soon. I must get Ann Steer's will posted this weekend.
John Steer, Dorking, England
Deidre,
Good to hear from you and many thanks for the corrections. I'd missed that
Modbury baptism and have now had a look at the microfiche copies of the
Churchstow registers.
It was Mary STURE who was baptised on 13.9.1713 in Churchstow and not
William. It is clearly STURE, although John who was baptised in 1716 is just
as clearly STEER.
I checked all the Churchstow records from 1700 to 1720 and found no other
STEER entries apart from the 1712 marriage and that has no details apart
from names
This is a highly speculative query
Thomas STEERS was baptised Richmond St Mary Magdalen, Surrey on 26.4.1789
He was the younger brother of John baptised in Richmond St Mary Magdalen, Surrey on 14.10.1781
John's son John was a seaman who settled in the Bermondsey area. John senior's grandsons were probably the STEERS apprenticed as lightermen from 1853 onwards.
A Thomas STEER (perhaps the one from Richmond or perhaps not) married a Maria STANYON or STANGON - both STANYON and STANGON appear in the Croydo
