1. Re: [STEER] Family of John STEER/Frances QUAIT [1]
Hello Jack, Sometimes I do these messages late at night, when my brain isn't functioning as it should :-) Point 1. Yes, that is the date of the license, my mistake is assuming that was also the date of the marriage. Point 2. Fanny & family are definitely there on the True Briton in December 1867, and in fact have the same fiche & page references as Louisa. I must have got a bit hooked on that 1873 date. My apologies. The B on the index indicates whether or not the ship sailed from a British port. So

3. (STEER) Jasper [1]
I've been off the list for 10 weeks and have missed all the messages during that time. I wonder if there have been any exciting new revelations about Jasper (bap. March 30 1760 - died January 1845) or his family? Information would be appreciated. Thank you. Bob Steer. Hamilton. Vic. Australia.
4. Re: [STEER] John Steer, father George Dawson [1]
Margaret, Many thanks for posting the marriage information. You asked Possible If she didn't, someone else in the parish may well have done so. Not a previous marriage for Mary Ann as it is only her name tha

6. Sophia Anne Edmonds [1]
Dear Margaret, Many thanks for your reply. I do not know how I missed seeing her on the 1891 census! I will have a look for her daughter on earlier censuses as you suggested and see what I can find. All her siblings are mentioned on the IGI site which I have found very helpful for Steers born abroad. Somehow she is not mentioned. With my thanks, William Highley

8. RE: [STEER] John Steer, father George Dawson [1]
This was from John in November, with possible reasons for name of George Dawson as father of John Steer. IGI transcription error has now been outruled Margaret ''Not easy to explain why John Steer's father is called George Dawson, it should be checked that it isn't just and IGI transcription error. Under English law anyone can call themselves whatever they like, provided that they are not doing so to commit a fraud; there needs to be some reason for someone to use a differnt name. 9. Re: [STEER] Steer, Stear etc VETS [1]
The use of Distin as a forename appears to have originated from William STEER/STEAR/STEERE - 17.1.1776 baptised Churchstow, Devon - 13.12.1857 died, 17.12.1857 buried Aveton Gifford, who married 17.4.1802 in Stoke Damerel, Devon to Mary DUSTAN They had three children - Thomas, William and John Distin - before William senior set up home with Elizabeth JEWEL in 1825/6 and produced a second family. Thomas STEAR/STEER became a horse and cattle doctor in Ashburton and as far as I know had none of his sev

13. RE: [STEER] Robert Popplewell Steer Johnson [1]
Try my web-site for information on the relationships. They are part of the family of the Derbyshire-Yorkshire Steers. However note that the earlier Derbyshire links are not proven. The earliest proven link is Robert of Edensor whose son William settled in Yorkshire. http://users.bigpond.net.au/linleymh/index.htm Then go in via my husband's line. Contact me if you need further clarification - the website does not include all info. Linley -----Original Message----- From: William Highley [mailto:william@

Jack and others, Have you had a look at this one? Quite a few STEER entries, I wondered if the Thomas STEER, 1855, was the same Thomas STEER, Naval Pensioner we were looking for a week or so ago. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/royal-navy-service.asp#searching This webpage was posted on the Surrey list recently. Bob et al, This is what I have for the first two generations of the Jasper tribe. Can anyone add to it or correct it, please? I have a particular interest because I am both a CRANCH and a LUCKHAM descendent, but cannot yet link my STEER herd with Agnes CRANCH or Mary LUCKHAM GENERATION 1 William STEER/STEARE/STURE - possibly 25.2.1770 buried Aveton Gifford, Devon NOTE - references to Ann wife of William being buried in Aveton Gifford in 1774 may well refer to the wife of yeoman William who signed
17. Louisa August Steer-mystery explained. [1]
Hi everyone, Just had to tell you about my exciting find. Ever since I started researching this STEER family I've been puzzled as to how and why a 14 year old would come to Australia apparently on her own. There was no apparent connection to anyone else on the ship. Recently I was given a set of Victorian BDM CD's, and have been amusing myself playing around with them. Today I found the death of another of the children of John STEER and Francis Caroline QUAIT, Fanny Phillips. From there I went to th
18. Rotherhithe lightermen [1]
I think that this is a branch of Heather's Rotherhithe lightermen. I believe that she is descended from John baptised 1781. Can anyone add anything to this segment please? The 1861 census returns would be a really helpful addition. Children of John STEERS and Jane Mary STEERS - 26.12.1779 baptised Richmond St Mary Magdalen, Surrey John STEERS - 14.10.1781 baptised Richmond St Mary Magdalen, Surrey Married Sarah Jane STEARES - 2.3.1784 baptised Richmond St Mary Magdalen, Surrey William STEERS - 24.

20. Francis William son of Thomas STEER - 1891 and 1901 [1]
Francis William STEER married Amy LINSCOTT on 21?.5.1912 in Devonport registry office, Devon He was described as a skilled labourer of 44 Victory Street, aged 24 and she was aged 33 of the same address. I do not know if either had been married before. Francis William's father was Thomas STEER (naval pensioner) and the witnesses were Thomas STEER and Mary Ann STEER It is possible that Thomas originated in Kent, but I have no firm evidence of that. Can anyone find the STEER father and son on the 1891

Deidre and Helen, What I have on this family is below, but the lack of detail and of original sources means that there are more questions than answers. It may be possible to go further, but not without some more background information. Judy's right, what was a little local difficulty has become bigger and I've been dragged out of early retirement to assist. I'm reading what's happening on the list and hope to give full attention soon. I must get Ann Steer's will posted this weekend. John Steer, Dorking, England
24. Re: [STEER] Jspers [1]
Deidre, Good to hear from you and many thanks for the corrections. I'd missed that Modbury baptism and have now had a look at the microfiche copies of the Churchstow registers. It was Mary STURE who was baptised on 13.9.1713 in Churchstow and not William. It is clearly STURE, although John who was baptised in 1716 is just as clearly STEER. I checked all the Churchstow records from 1700 to 1720 and found no other STEER entries apart from the 1712 marriage and that has no details apart from names
25. Thomas STEERS lighterman [1]
This is a highly speculative query Thomas STEERS was baptised Richmond St Mary Magdalen, Surrey on 26.4.1789 He was the younger brother of John baptised in Richmond St Mary Magdalen, Surrey on 14.10.1781 John's son John was a seaman who settled in the Bermondsey area. John senior's grandsons were probably the STEERS apprenticed as lightermen from 1853 onwards. A Thomas STEER (perhaps the one from Richmond or perhaps not) married a Maria STANYON or STANGON - both STANYON and STANGON appear in the Croydo
