Not a bad idea!
My family seems to have used all variants of the surname through the
generations. My great-great grandfather was Iain STIUBHARD, a
gaelic-speaking Catholic who immigrated to Cape Breton Island around 1816.
His son, my great-grandfather, is listed in an 1893 King County, Washington
census as Alex STUART. Alex's son, my grandfather, was Joseph STEWART.
A sizeable segment of the highlander population was illiterate, and the name
got spelled as whatever the English or Canadian or American bure
The list is alive and well. It just goes through periods of low to no
activity. Mostly, I think, because so many Stuarts (and Steuarts,
Stiubhards, Stubberts, and all the other variants) wind up in the STEWART-L
list be default.
But we have lots of subscribers to the STUART-L list. If there's no traffic,
it just means everyone is waiting for someone else to write womething.
Talk amongst yourselves. :)

I am looking for information on John Stuart (born Ireland) married
Rachel Unknown. She married in Parke Co, IN (1846) George Fisher Sr. By
1850 she was living with her son Alexander Stuart and continued to live
with him through the 1870 census. John Stuart had four sons: Alexander
(b 1830); James (b 1832); William; and Samuel (died young). He had three
daughters of unknown names. Were two of them Sarah Stuart who married J.

Here is what I have so far about my Stuart decendants from Glasgow,

I have taken on the admin duties for the STUART and STEWARD GenConnect
boards, and since the STEWARD list has come up for adoption, I have
submitted my request to be listowner. Of course, I'm already listowner of
the STEWART and STUART lists.
Since these three lists are all concerned with what is ultimately the same
family or clan, I'm looking forward to this opportunity to encourage
cooperation and cross-fertilization of ideas among
As the editor and producer of Calling All Stewarts - Stewart Family
Genealogical Journal, I could not help but want to address ALL spellings of
st**s to cover all interested parties, but as Mary said, to cover all the
misspellings AND changes. My Stewarts seemed to have gone from Stewart in
NC to Stuart in TN and Stewart in AL later. Interestingly enough, the
Stuart spelling may have been themselves, or a transcriber in the courts
systems, but in TN, for example in LCT, all the St*s were spelled Stuart fo
I am researching Clark STUART b. 28 Jan 1840 and d. 6 November 1917 in
Springwater(LIvingston) NY. He married Lucinda Waite PARISH on 8 Dec.

to contact others searching for this line.
Has the Stuart-L been dead lately?

Hi!
I have traced my Stuarts to Inverkeithny, Banffshire starting with James and
his wife Margaret Tocher m:19Aug 1739. Then comes John Stuart with wife
Elisabeth Farskine. Their son William b:1796 left the area and went to
Midmar Aberdeenshire via Gartly and married Ann Smith. It was in Midmar that
I find his name being spelled Stewart. William and Ann had 13 children -
some scattered about in Scotland, one went to Australia.
I have info on some but would love to find out what happened to the
Maybe we should have an update on the names we are looking for. And everyone
could get re-acquainted.

Thank you all for your input, from all three lists.
As I said, it's really a moot question, since there isn't any way to
actually combine the lists into one, anyway. The Rootsweb system allows for
the creation of new lists at will, so if even one person wants a list for a
particular spelling, it will exist, so we should make the best use of it we
can.
On the other hand, there is a lot of interest on all three lists in
cross-fertilization, so I will do my best to make sure that items of
interest get posted
Seeking additional info on George Stuart, b feb 1735/36 in England, and his
wife Christine Holsapple, living in Greenbrier co, VA in the late 1700's
early 1800's. Would like to know who his parents and siblings were, what
part of England he was born in.
I received the book "The Forgotten Monarchy of Scotland" for Christmas.
According to this book, the name started as the profession Steward
(Seneschal) as in William the Steward of King Whatever. It usually was a
hereditory position. Eventually the name became a family name as
Stewart. When Mary Queen of Scots (of the Stewart line) went to France
as a small child and grew up there, the name was given the French
spelling of Stuart. The spelling seems to be used inter-changeably. And

There was a family of Stewarts living in Martinsburg, Berkley Co. VA (now
WV) in the late 1700's and early 1800's. Lazarus Stewart appears to be the
father of several sons. Among their names are Adam, John, Robert, James &
William. Does anyone know of descendants of these. Could they be the
ancestors of my Thomas? See note below,
Looking for the parents and siblings of Thomas W(ilson?) Stewart. According
to CW pension papers, Thomas W. Stewart was born ca 1827 in Berkely Co.,

Several people have already suggested combining the lists. (Wow! Youse guys
ARE paying attention... :) There are serious obstacles to doing that because
of the way Rootsweb is organized, but I'll look into it.
One way would be for me to just combine the lists of subscribers, but that
would involve manually adding each name to each list, and I couldn't do that
without getting individual permission from each subscriber. Admin nightmare.
The GenConnect boards still have to remain under the variant spellings
I located my STUART family in the Tisomingo Co, MX 1850 census. They later
migrated to the areas of Johnson , Jack, & Cherokee Co, TX:

I am trying to find my greatmother Mary Stuart. On the US census
records she is listed as coming from Ireland. I believe it was Northern
Ireland. She emigrated
sometime before 1850. Her Mothers name was Eliza and her fathers name was
James She might have had a sister Elizabeth. If any of this sounds familiar
to any
one Iwould like to hear from you.

My ggrand was Albert L. STUART, b. Litchfield, CT on June 25, 1819. His parents are unknown. The 1820 CT Cenus only shows eight heads of house named STUART in the state No names for children listed, only children in certain age groups. Albert's grandchildren say he moved to KY, and then TN. I first find him in Shelby County TN on the 1840 Census. He was married and was a practicing 20 year old lawyer. I found a marriage license for him dated January 2, 1840 in the same location. Wife was a Susan Rea b. T
