On the Netscape 'Compose' screen, all you need to do is click on
'Insert' and then 'Characters and symbols' and you can see the whole
range without all this Alt 000111222223 stuff. I can't see an easy way
of doing this with Outlook though, despite the facility being available
in Word.
To all those faithful users of Netscape!!

G'day from OZ,
Thanks to David for his explanation of what is really meant by Eastbourne in
the FreeBMD records. For the benefit of us colonials could someone please
indicate if Hailsham is in the same category & if so provide a similar
breakdown & a comment on why the event location is not provided as it goes
without saying that this is a vital clue in anyone's research.

You are quite right John, and I do apologise for this.
The names I am looking for are;
Milton and Kate ROGERS, Milton b. approx 1857 (place unknown), and Kate
b.1866 Portsea, Hampshire.
They were married in 1885, in St.Thomas Portsmouth.
Also,
Dennis and Georgina SULLIVAN, Dennis b.1843 Co.Cork, Ireland, and Georgina
b.1853, St.Thomas Portsea. They married in 1872 in Sculcoates, East
Yorkshire.
I have used different spellings for each of these on the 1901 and cannot
seem to come up with either of them
Hello again listers
Thanks a lot for all the ideas you all supplied. You're such a great list, you have answers to everything!!! It's great to get an insight into the way people lived in the past. It makes all this family history lark so much more than just names and dates.
Kind regards,
Cheryl

Hello everybody my name is David NICHOLS and I am a new member. I live in Upper Hutt, Wellington New Zealand and I am starting to research info for NICHOLS/MAYNARD. My cousin Ron Attfield and his nephew Roger White in England have been researching the two names above and have come up with the following. Agness MAYNARD had an illegitimate child EMILY at the Brighton Workhouse on 9th March 1880 but the birth certificate did not record the father's name or occupation. I believe that the illegitimate children

Hi Ken,
Newington was part of the County of Surrey up to 1889 when it became part of the County of
London, and came under a local Metropolitan Council, probably Southwark. In 1965 the area
was formed into the London Borough of Southwark.
If you visit the Charles Booth website: http://booth.lse.ac.uk/
it has maps of the parishes in that area in 1898 plus a modern day comparison, (find under
Poverty Maps of London - search).
I cannot help you with your family unfortunately.

Hello Listers,
Does anyone kind person have a copy of the above magazine. I understand
that in issue # 57 there is an article about the HILL name. If someone has
it could they be so kind as to see what it says.
Thanks

Joan - thanks also to you for summarising the results of your query and
providing a concise pricis. I had not realised the bit about having
property in more than one county. I will now have to search the wills in
Chichester to track down my poor relations too!
A supplementary question though. Can I search the Chichester wills on line
or do I have to go there in person? Do you have the contact details so I
can ask for a search if this is possible?
Many thanks,

Hello Listers,
Is anyone researching or has anyone seen THOMAS CARTWRIGHT, Commander, RN in the Worthing area? Thomas died on the 5th August 1867 at 3 Park Crescent, Worthing. He was 68 yrs old. He married ANN BAZLEY in Devon in 1824 and they had two children. The informant was a C.L. Cartwright of 3 Park Crescent.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Listers,
Amongst a pile of old sheet music I bought a while ago I found some words
and music for The Song of the Stamshaw Boys.
>From reading it it seems to be a school song. The words were written by a
E.C. HARVEY D.C.M.and the music is written by by a W.J.HAWKINS.
Does anyone know which school this song relates to and when it was written?
If anyone would like a copy of it I'd be happy to photocopy it but would
have to send it throught the post as my server doesn't like attatchments for
some reason!!
Hi Pam & others,
The following was on the Birmingham list last year, not sure if it fits your case of Back House, but might help explain.
Jane in sunny Queensland
Back-to-backs were a cheap way of fitting as many families into small confined areas as possible in the large Industrial cities in Victorian times.Space was at a premium and most houses were rented. The landlords built the houses to be divided down the middle so that at the front of the house would be two rooms downstairs with another two rooms
Could SKS who has easy access to the 1841 census look up Robert BUDGEN living with his wife Elizabeth BUDGEN (probably in Newick) and any family they might have.
Many thanks in anticipation

Just discovered (thanks to 1901 census and IGI) the following:
Charles Henry Jenner Mepham baptised on the 5th October 1856 in Burwash, Sussex to an unmarried mother called Mary Mepham. Mary Mepham married Charles Henry Jenner on the 22nd November 1856 in Burwash. Apparently the bride was 27 (b.1828) and the groom was 33 (b.1823).
Charles Henry (Junior) married a lady called Alice, (from a London Borough it says on the 1901!) and these were their child

Newbe to the list researching James William Comber, b. abt. 1852

They apparently raised their family in the general area of Cuckfield

I have just subscribed to the list and have a somewhat strange request.
As a child, in the 50's and 60's, I was taken by my parents to visit
"Auntie Emily and Uncle Bungy" in Horsham. We lived in Morden,
Surrey. They were, at that time, in their seventies, or even eighties
and would undoubtedly have died by now. "Bungy" was a nickname
which, I believe, was due to his working in a pub or brewery as a young
man and doing something with bungs in barrels.
That is all the information I have on the
Hello again Pauline,
Samuel MAN(?), a Greengrocer, aged 37, appears to be in Brighton in 1851
at 78, Church Stret (census) but his birth is recorded as Mayfield. There
are later listings in 1867 & 1871 Kelly's for a Samuel MANN, Greengrocer, at
11, Church Street.
I also noted that there was a court hearing at the Sussex Quarter sessions
in 1842 (ref 1842/844) where Samuel MANN a labourer aged 30 offended against
Lewis GARLAND and Ed WORSFOLD. If you require further details on that you
will need to contac
