2. [SXP] East and West Sussex [1]
Dear All Thought the following could be of interest in the discussion about East and West Sussex - the division in one way appears to go back a long way. In John Speeds (1552-1629) Tudor Atlas The Counties of Britain he apparently had commented on the inadequacy of Sussex roads, simply saying that they were ill in winter . Problems stemming from poor roads and involving administration, defence and trade resulted in the countys somewhat unusually having two shire towns - Chichester in the west

Hi Julie, When I read your message I was envious of not being anywhere close enough to attend. I would have loved to hear about her diary especially accompanied with a slide show. I would like to point out however that I think you meant she emigrated to Canada in the late 1800's. Times are tough but we were living quite well here in Canada in the late 1900's. Hello Andy and Errol, It must depend on where you are researching for the surname of SMITH, I do a lot of researching in Guildford and the villages south of Guildford. Smith is a surname that you do not come across very often, back in the 1700s and 1800s, it is more popular in the 1900s. I don't know how my grandfather go linked to a church in Kent or Surrey, but it could have been because he was a carpenter and his work ranged from a lunatic asylum in Chichester, a train station in Bognor to places north of Stonehenge. Out of respect for the church pastor arranging for his paid passage to Canada through a retired Boer war Colonel, my fathers middle name was Caple. I also found a photograph postcard of a church and on the back was written Capel Church. I will also contact the addre

21. [SXP] Re: Posting Interests [0.978223]
Hello, I have just traced the possibility my husbands ancestors lived in Sussex and wondered if anyone else is researching the name WHYBORN. It may be that I have found a member of the family on the 1881 in the Bexhill area. I know there are a lot of other WHYBORNs around this area. In particular I am looking at Furrlenn (spelt Furlen on the 1881 census) born 1870`s according to the census, and his `parents` Charles and Mary. I would be pleased to hear from anyone researching the name.
