Dear Kinsmen and friends,
Is there anyone out there who has any information about Captain
James Elliott who served in the Virginia Militia under Campbell at the
Battle of King's Mountain. He was killed shortly afterwards in an Ex-
pedition against the Cherokee. Any Information is appreciated.
Many thanks,
John W. Elliott

Dear Kinsmen and friends,
Is there anyone out there with knowledge of early settlers, in the
Abingdon/Damascus/Taylor Valley areas of SW VA. or the Adjoining Wau-
taga settlements of Upper East Tennesee,by the surname of Elliott.Fam-
ily tradition has three Elliott brothers immigrating from either the
Scottish Borders or Northern Ireland and then settling on the frontier
in SW VA. around 1723. It is believed they were participants in the
French and Indian Wars and it is documented that Cpt. James Elli
It's always pleasing to see a familiar family name pop up on the list.
"Susong" was a maternal ancestor and I was delighted to see the information
concerning the Susong Cemetery. Do you know where the name Susong derived?
Although it takes on the oriental sound, I believe it might be Scottish!

The KAK/WORM virus is the least of your worry. The Trojans are even more
sneaky. Some once installed on your computer will allow a malicious

The USGS lists 213 cemeteries in Wise Co., but none called the Appalachia
Cemetery. Below are the names of cemeteries listed that are in Appalachia.
Sometimes what the USGS calls a place and the folks that live in the area
call the same place aren't anything alike!
Andover Cemetery
Kilbourn Cemetery
Oak View Cemetery
Maybe somebody has been to these cemeteries and knows if any of them, or
all of them ;) are on a hill?
Good Luck, pat

Adams is more likely a Scots/Scots-Irish name. But that may be several
generations back.
The name Adams does not appear on the 1857 Wise County, Virginia Land
Tax List.
[http://www.ls.net/~newriver/va/wise1857.htm] This may mean that they
did not own taxable property or that they had not moved into the County
yet.
Are there any unique first names that might give a clue? Unfortunately,
John Adams and, to a lesser extent, Mary Garner, are fairly common
names.

All,
I did not mention but most of those towns are becoming ghost
towns.
The houses and buildings are rotting and caving in. There are
some new homes in some areas. I would guess the population
generally was declining. Coal mining takes a lot less miners.
Oceana was the most prosperious I saw. Welch and Bradshaw
looked very poor. What was strange was that I saw no family
cemeteries. There is one large cemetery in Oceana, I think.

Hi. Im not sure what county the Fort is in, but my ancestors built the Fort Blakemore in VA. I have a little bit of its history, but has anyone been there? Is there anything left of it? A slave named Swann, later Hamilton, saved several children there. I would really appreciate any info.

Interested in any information of these families in early Washington County
(pre 1790). These families moved from Craven Co. to Washington Co. before
moving through KY and settling in the Sumner Co., TN area. Their property
was on the Holstein (sp?) around Moccasin Creek, I have transcribed a land
grant signed by Gov. Patrick Henry and have found a number of references to
the family. Names would include James King Kerr/Carr, King Kerr/Carr and
Elisha Oglesby.

In 1784 almost every established home had a spinning wheel and loom.. Looms
were quite cumbersome and hard to move and were probably left behind when
moving great distances.. Every settlement had men who could build looms but
spinning wheels were more difficult to make.. of course, anyone who could
make a wagon wheel could have built a spinning wheel too.. Carpenters tools
and crosscut saws were valuable in those days.. especially on the frontier..

day that she was buried. The sun would shine, then snow showers, then thunder
and lightning! This was a bit unsettling to the more superstitious people.
