In a letter dated Dec 17, 1924, my grandmother writes : "Is Harley and Pearl still "hitting" in the usual way?"
Could this be Harley STEWART & Pearl ???

My mom and dad did that...lived in Portsmouth and married in Greenup while
my grandparents went the other way....lived in Ky and married in Portsmouth.
Mom used to tell me that the Ohio river wasn't as wide or as deep as it was
when she was a child. In the winter, she said you could walk across it when
it froze...and that was most of the winter.
Maybe, instead of a ladder propped up against the house, parents gave the
kids ice skates..... ;o)

Still searching the Phillips family in Portsmouth. This time I'm looking
for George Phillips 1875-? He moved to Cincinati in the early 1900's and
then I find a reference to him being in Cleveland. I think that is where he
died because there is a SSDI entry for a George Phillips of his birth date
with a death in July 1964 in Cleveland.
Don't know anything about him other than his birth date and possible death
date.
Pam
What was his name?

Dear researchers of the Lower Scioto Valley, Ohio Mailing List,
In the 1868/69 City Directory of Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio, a
William COOPER was listed, who worked for Captain William Wallace
LITTLE, in the Coal Business of Captain LITTLE.
Can anyone help me identify this William COOPER, so as to distinguish
him from other William COOPERs living in the area at that time?
I have the unenviable task of winnowing the William COOPERs in a
twenty-five mile radius of Portsmouth, Ohio from 1820 to 1880,
I must have missed the messages that gave the answers to the questions
about the Poor House and the Old Women's /Widows' Homes. Were they posted
to the list?
Were these places in existance in the 1820 to 1880 eras?
Where could I find info about them? Do lists exist of women living therein?

Ralph Bell (b. abt 1790/1800 - d. abt 1840/1850) was in the 1840 census
for Jefferson Township (probably Richmondale Post Office area) in Ross
County in 1840. By 1850, he appears to be deceased, and his apparent
widow Charlotte (b. abt 1803 - died after 1860) is in the 1850 census for
the Sharonville area ('can'tfind it on a modern map) in Jackson Township
in Pike County. Is someone willing to look them up in the cemetery books
for these counties or areas? (I'm not positive that Ralph and Charlotte

I am still trying to track down my Philips family in Portsmouth and need to
fill in some dates.
Martha Philips married Edward Cook in the late 1880's. They had one son,
Charles, who was in management at Detroit Steel for a long time and I don't
think, ever married. I would like to find out what Martha's death date is
and something about Edward...birth and death dates, names of parents etc.
Anyone out there researching a Cook family where this sounds familiar?

My whole Phillips line was in Portsmouth from 1854 up to atleast 1898 when
John E. Phillips died.
I haven't been able to find much on two of the 7 children he and Maria
Ledbetter had from 1856-1878.
George was born August 2,1876. He moved to Cincinati after 1898 (I think)
and then on to Cleveland where I think he worked and was living when he
died. I would love to know who he married etc...
Martha was born in 1865 or 1868 and married C.E. Cook probably around the
late 1880's or 90's. They had one son,
I have been searching for a Life History that my ggrfather finished
writing in 1895 with no luck. He lived in the Bear Creek, Morgan Twsp,
Scioto Co., from the 1850's to his death in 1905. He finished the book
in 1895. I have searched books published and the libraries with no luck.
Does anyone have any ideas as to where someone living in the area at
that time would have a book printed or would have given it for safe
keeping. He was also known as the "Bear Creek Poet" but I have not found
any of his poems.
Can someone remind me how you go about obtaining birth, death or military
(specifically, WW1) records from Columbus or from the original county of
birth.
What is the process?
Thanks,
Pam
