1. Scotch-Irish migration into Tennessee [1]
Dear List Members, This is my first posting to the list, and I was wondering if anyone could help me. I've been trying--in vain--to trace the roots of my ggrandfather William Wood, killed while still young in a mining accident in north Alabama in the late 1890's. In exploring all possible paths (literally) of research, it occured to me that the family preserves a memory that William Wood was of Scotch-Irish descent. His family eventually ended up in Tennessee, from where he moved to north Alabama, pro

Hi, It was my understanding that Col. & Gov. Sevier of Tennessee left VMI before 1780 at age 17, speaking 6 languages and married Sarah Clark, age 15. They were my ancestors- . What was the founding date for VMI ? Was the school Sevier attended VMI or an earlier parent school of VMI , like Blount College which became the University of Tennessee at Knoxville? Sevier was on the board of Greeneville (Tenn>) with friend William Blount AND on the board of Blount College. His education was as high as any av

I think the Georgia John Coffee was the one who opened the Old Coffee Road through South Georgia and opened it to settlement after the territory was stolen from the Creeks. Back in the '50's, a friend opened a restaurant and RV camp at the intersection of that road and newly opened I-75. I tried to talk him into calling it t

Hi, 1. They may have floated down the Ohio Riover from West Virginia or states north and east of West Virginia, except for the periods of strife when the Spanish closed the river route. 2. Thanks, Judy, but John Sevier attended VMI about 1750 to 1770, in that range, as he was A Col. In Rev. War, 1787, King's Mountain and 37 other battles - either that or he attended a parent school , like Blount College, where Sevier was a Board member, became a Board member. It later became UT- No, not University of Texas, but University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Tennessee. Hiow can the World Book encyclopediaes say he was a glib tongued , charming, Frontier politician and land speculator. They stop sho
