Paulette...
My Travis family came into SC at Savannah in 1772....In the family records
it states.."Aunt Rachal crossed the Cumberland gap on her 12th birthday,
walking into Kentucky on Christmas Day, 1803"...
So many of the pioneers walked into Kentucky...the forest was thick and the
trails narrow, so using a hore to pack in goods was the best way..Wagon
trains may have come later, after the paths became wider roads...

Hi Sandy..

George Washington was the son of a second wife - he had an older half
brother who got their father's property. So George was sent out in his
teens to learn the art of survey....that is why you will find he had land
all over the place. He often got part of his pay in land. He very much
wanted to be an English gentleman in his early years, wanted to be in the
British Army. When he was sent out with Braddock....I think George pretty
much began the French and Indian War on his own.

John English Deatherage took his family from Roane County, Tennessee, "on
Thursday the 7th of October 1852." A James McCamy traveled with them. They
crossed the Tennessee River the first day. The next night they camped on
the summit of the Cumberland Mountain. On the 12th they began their descent
from the mountain, passing a resort at a medicinal spring, and camping at
Sparta. On the 13th, they "came to Rock Island Ferry and paid 90 cents for
ferriage." On the 14th the wagons forded Rolling River and
Hi Paulette,
Thanks for the input on my George Washington question, you've helped get me
on track and I think placed my George Washington RUDD in the right time and
for the right place. By the way are you researching TANNER from SC or FL?
PS. Yes, I can see how art and math work together... right brain-left

Thanks again for taking time to help me out,

Do you have any more info on Lord Dunmore's War and/or the Battle of Point

I think my Dent line did this. Supposedly the immigrant mother got an ax in
her head in the Shenandoah, and the whole family became indian fighters all.
Went into TN, IN then fought the Black Hawk War, Mexican War and then to
the CA Gold Rush. [three generations here].

Hi. She doesn't mention the "Pig Trail", but she does go into a little
detail of the Indian trails and how they bent saplings to point to "live"
water, i.e., springfed, and where some of these trees are today {1993}.
There is a map that shows old Indian trails and their relative location to a
few of the main motor routes today. I hadn't realized how many different
tribes crossed Missouri from the north, west and south. Several head to St.
Louis, but her map ends at the Mississippi, which makes it look li
Hey List,
Someone was inquiring about the naming of children after George
Washington. How many of you have a combination of John Fletcher and Jasper
Newton in your families? We kept wondering about our Jasper Fletcher Wingo,
and if those had been family names somewhere. Someone said that these two
men were well known militia men with Francis Marion, "The Swamp Fox" of the
Rev. War. I do not know how much is fact or fiction, but the PATRIOT seems
to have followed the life of Francis Marion pre
Sandy, I'm afraid that that story was the only one that I have any basis for
knowing the route that they took. And that was because several people from
the Hempstead Co., AR Historical group got out several years ago before some
of these people died and got them to tell the stories.
Another of my ggrandfathers left Georgia and went to Arkansas and I can only
conjecture which route he took and how they traveled. Within a year after
they left GA, (I know the approximately time because one of my aunts

The Library of Virginia digital collection has a section on line concerning Lord
Dunmore's War. It has rosters and pay lists with an index . See.

Good afternoon, I just read Carole's story and thoroughly enjoyed it!!
I just found out yesterday, my ggggrandfather, Rev. Andrew Jackson West, was
a wagon maker here in Calhoun Co. in 1860. Had other things to do today so I
wasn't able to get more information.
I know he was from Spartanburg, SC and may have been in GA for a short while
because the AL 1860 census has his daughter Sally as being born in GA about
1858. His oldest daughter, born about 1856 has that she was born in SC.
His parents may
Paulette, I don't know where you live in Florida, but if you are near
Tampa, check this out. One of the best-equipped genealogical
collections that I have used is the one at the main branch (downtown)
of the Tampa Public Library. I can hardly wait to get back down there
to do more searching!
Best wishes for more rain,

I have used Family Tree Maker for about ten years and find it easy to use. The internet search features are especially useful. Am I missing something by not trying other programs?

I have got family tree maker also and despise it. My cousin and I worked on
our family TREE together and I can't get hers or mine to even be able to
browse.
My husband did my TERRY family and I have to go to his computer to find my own
name.
Mary et al....I just seem to be having the worst time!!! Would it be correct

well as KY...for the time frame of 1744-1800? I'm sure Duplin wasn't even a
county then, so I should find which county it was and search that one?? Maps
from that era are not easy to find as you probably already know. Here's a
good question: when recording the information, would it be correct to list
each county...the original, then the later?
Hello Everyone:
Today is my first day to be on the Southern Trails List. My name is Armenta Akers McWethey and I live in Southern Oklahoma.
The family names I will be searching are Akers and Netherland, Gibson and Smithhart, Hale and Noel, Robinson and McCoy. Those names belong to my g-grandparents. A lot of other names are associated with these primary family members but will not be carried at this time as prominent surnames.
The States I search most for these people are NJ, VA, TN, KY, SC, MO, AR, GA
As far as I know none of my Tanner relatives ended up in Texas. I have them
pretty well covered present > 1750ish. Unless one of them snuck off from the
rest of the clan....which is possible. There were some Gypsy Tanners as well
as Mungeleon...all short, dark, and even red-headed. AS yet no one has been
able to find a spouse for Saml. Tanner b. abt. 1744, Duplin (?) co., NC.
There is an Indian in the mix somewhere...may be his wife or mother or father
or??? Interesting, Saml. served in the Rev.
Amen to that.
