Several people have answered Cheryl's questions about having one or several databases. For my two cents worth, keep everybody in one. I color code for a number of things, but not family line. I have a FAMILY flag. There are 8 choices of values, representing my 4 grandparents, and my wife's 4 grandparents (H for my Grandmother Hansson's line, O for my GM Olsson, etc.). I have added a few more choices, for people who are somewhat connected but peripheral. On the basis of that flag, I can print lists, or crea

You can then print it or alter it as you like. I have used this feature to

For example, do you only include up to 3rd cousins... I mean, after you start seeing 8th cousins, 4 times removed, it seems that the relationships are very distant and maybe not substantial. I have a different perspective on this.< When I posted my "rules" for entering family, I now see I probably should have added that most all of my family was in

Hi Lee and all, Thanks for your explanation of what "conditional" means, and also for your elaboration of the uses of the other fields on the Source Definition Page. With all the great suggestions and guidance I have received in the past couple of days, I feel that I can proceed with my "practice dataset" with reasonable expectations that I won't have to come crying to the list again.....at least for a few days On the subject of a separate newbie list, I'm afraid I may have unintentionally given the imp
15. Re: TMG-L: Starting Out Tips ? [0.971697]
My tips for beginners would be: 1. Go through the tutorial provided, and play with the sample dataset until you feel very comfortable with the program. (It won't take as long as you might think.) 2. Be sure to list sources and surety so that when you go back to the record a few years from now you can easily go right to the original source. 3. Fill in just as much detail as you can on places - make use of the Geobase provided to get county, etc. information. 4. Build your own family database, st

17. TMG-L: Last-word Evidence [0.971697]
So often I have read on this list statements to the effect that obtaining a birth record or death record is the last word, to which all other evidence must humbly bow. Well, I've examined many death records and it just ain't so. They just aren't that accurate. A death record is composed at a difficult time when nobody remembers much of anything, and the physician may not even know the guy. This isn't theory but experience. A death record's statements about parentage, age, and place of origin are of

John, Thanks for the information. I am going to try it to see how it goes but do not think that will get the job done. With over 12,000 linked descendants through one individual, the number of families in a given generation will still produce web pages that are too large to be usable with the present bandwidth limitations for most people. I know I could split the files and make manual connections but that defeats the purpose of using a software program. I simply can not believe that "THE BEST" genealogy
