1. Re: [TMG] Roles not coming up for advanced data entry in TMG 5.11 [1]
Thank you Nikki and Paul for answering my question so promptly. In particular, thank you for reminding me that UFT provided all those roles. I knew that I had forgotten something - I should have remembered, because there was so much discussion about UFT and all its roles. I hope that I can keep learning as fast as I am forgetting. Cheers, George
2. [TMG] Filing with TMG number or Person Reference Number [1]
In a discussion on the TMG-UK list, the pros and cons of basing a filing system on TMG person numbers was discussed. The main pro is that TMG gives every person a unique number. Let us assume that we are perfectly happy to use these numbers and don't wish to use some number that we have generated. It was suggested that the TMG person numbers are easily changed (unintentionally), for example in merging data. I do not know whether the person reference field is just as likely to be changed unintentionally. If
3. [TMG] Split citation details still require a space for a skip. [1]
Hello Listers, My versions of TMG5 (gold) behave in exactly the same way as my TMG4 did, with split CDs. That is, if a space is left between one delimeter pair and the next delimeter pair, the corresponding citation detail is skipped and TMG keeps correct count of the citation details. However, if no space is left, TMG treats the third bar as a pair and skips one citation, then treats the fourth bar as another pair and so skips another citation; what is more, all the subsequent citations will be effectivel
4. Re: [TMG] Filing with TMG number or Person Reference Number [1]
Thank you Bobbie for a very interesting reply. I agree that citations refer to documents and that these may not be specifically associated with any person in the database; in fact, many are maps or sources of regional information. Even so, many of the documents are associated with one person or his family and, with those documents, I talk of basing the document number on the person (preceded by a code for the type of file), whereas you talk of basing it on the time when the document was entered into the sys
5. [TMG] Roles not coming up for advanced data entry in TMG 5.11 [1]
Hello to all, Can anyone please point out what I have missed? I purchased a second (1/2 price) copy of 5.11 gold and downloaded it for my wife. In the mean time, I had downloaded to my own computer the upgrade from 5.10 to 5.11. Now I find that when I set my wife's version on "advanced" data entry, it allows the entry of witnesses for a marriage, but the only roles listed are "principal, witness, bride and groom". I can add roles by typing them in and I suppose that I could type in sentences for them; but
6. Re: [TMG] Birth and death certificates [1]
Hello Marge, Let us take the example of the Australian state of New South Wales, for which I have many BDM events. I use the generic Source type "BDM Register and fill in: Abbreviation: N.S.W. BDM Register Title: N.S.W Register of BDM Short Title: N.S.W. Register of BDM [It is the same as title because this particular title is short.] The abbreviation is often different, because I arrange the order of words so as to make it easy to find in the list of sources. The Repository is, of course, the S

I want the result to look essentially like Mills'. Any suggestions? Hello Marge,
8. Re: [TMG] Filing with TMG number or Person Reference Number [1]
Thank you Lee for a very clear example of the problems associated with merging persons (a neccessary operation), if the filing system is based on the TMG ID numbers. My immediate reaction is to say that whenever two persons are merged, the two ID numbers should be recorded in some "file of merged numbers", unless you are CERTAIN that there are no files associated with the one merged. Also I would not use the spare ID number again. However, what are the alternatives to basing a filing system on TMG ID numb

12. [TMG] Journal report - filter help needed [0.969471]
I'm one of those eternally filter-challenged people! I've played with this for an hour and have made a mess of it, and am now begging for help. I want to write a Journal report, but with only one descendant line of the family. This particular tree is huge. I have the progenitor, say ID #193. I want to write the report for him and his descendants down one particular branch, to include the descendant ID #11477. How do I do this?? I'm hoping this isn't as hard as I'm trying to make it! If it is VEr 4.0x, then you can restore from the backup file that you have. The file is xxxx.sqz. If you have Ver 5.xx, you can import from the same backup file. 14. Re: [TMG] Advantage of Project Explorer? [0.969471]
Here is what the help file says about each: Use Project Explorer if you want: 7 a list that is similar to a navigable descendant chart. 7 to see two or more descendants at the same time, one above the other (tree fashion). 7 to see people sorted first by data set and then by name. 7 to see a list of unique surnames (surname collapsed list). You can then click on the plus to expand one or more surnames to show the individuals with that surname. 7 to use the Previous and/or Next buttons to navigate through

How often should you back up?? When you would really cry if you lost everything RIGHT NOW, Then you should have backed up 5 minutes ago!! If you don't care, don't bother to back up. I am really paranoid about backing up and re-indexing. I keep my last 3 or 4 backups, in case one of the back-ups fail. Thank you Elizabeth & Bob. I think I may have it. Although I've been using TMG for a few years, I haven't paid too much attention to most of the reports (as you can tell). Until you mentioned [WO] I had never noticed it although I now see it in "Getting the Most Out of . . . " which I had been reading. For the Principal's Sentence I have: [P] is buried in this plot with <[WO]> (I have only one principal and any others are witnesses.) For the Witness Sentence: [W] is buried in the same plot as [P]

21. RE: [TMG] Source Citing Problem [0.969471]
In UFT, we could put the information with the date and each place level of the place. What I would like to see TMG do is print the footnote for the place and then the date, using the surety level. For instance, if I put a 0 in the place, but a 2 in the date, then the place would not carry that footnote, but the date would. That would make sureties more important, but at least we would know what information came from each source. Teresa Ghee Elliott Any information I give that you can't find in your vers

Dick Lackey transcribed and published in his magazine, The Mississippi Genealogical Exchange, many unpublished sources that he found in various courthouses, libraries, etc. Although these unpublished sources would have no publication date, his transcription would.
