1. RE: [TMG] Creating GEDCOM [1]
Libby, What sort of edits do you want to do before uploading your GEDCOM to Rootsweb? I generally export who I want from TMG, then open the GEDCOM as a text file in Word (mine is too big for Notepad), run a series of text macros over it, make sure it is saved as a text file. I also generally do a check reimport of the editted file into a separate TMG project just to make sure I haven't stuffed anything up by my macros Then I upload the word editted gedcom to Rootsweb Lorna Henderson Waikanae, NZ ----

The above is a significant exception. Please note that it is only indirectly related to the original question; I am *NOT* advocating "outing" anyone, over

4. FW: [TMG] Backup Input read failure NO MORE NO MORE [1]
Last night (NZ time) I was having some trouble with backing up "When I backup I am getting the message "Input file read failure etc..." When I click OK the procedure continues and finally ends up with "Backup of *.sqz is complete" I can't see any pattern, the number of times varies and the file(s) that it stops on also varies." I did it again and again - ran Optimise and VFI again and again and finally posted a help message to the list, switched off the computer and went to bed. Then this morning I start
5. restore configuration [1]
I have bought a new laptop and have installed TMG on it. After installing TMG, I used restore to load my most recent backup file. My backup included (or at least I thought it did), my configuration. My configurarion was not restored and I really don't want to do it all again if I don't have to. Can someone tell me which files should have been included in the backup so I can add them from another backup? Does this make any sense? -- Dawn Ellis dawnsellis@earthlink.net http://freepages.genealogy.roots

7. RE: [TMG] Who to include in the family tree? [1]
This is interesting as it relates to TMG methodology. Wouldn't a custom flag be easier than exporting your core interest group to another database? If not, what are the issues? 8. Re: [TMG] Annotating Images of Documents [1]
Terry: I know which images you're talking about. Downloading the jpg isn't the same as making changes and then resaving, so you're probably not losing any pixels there. I'd take the jpg into Elements and immediately convert it to a tif, then do your edits. When you convert back to jpg you won't lose pixels from your changes. When I have to download and save an image from various online sources, I resort to two other methods, depending where it's from. Heritage Quest, for example, provides a PDF fil

10. C=,0,0 [1]
I'm looking at an Excel sheet showing the tag sentences exported from TMG by TMG Utility (Excel makes it easier to read than Notepad) and I see that there are a number of instances of C=,0,0 in some of the sentences if I use export all languages. There's none in my UKEnglish if I just export that. I know that there have been mentions of this in regard to errors, although I've had no errors myself that I can recall, is this something I should be concerned about? Using TMG I opened one of the tags wi
11. Re: [TMG] Repository Reference [1]
Ok. In my case its a microfilm I obtained on loan from LDS. Should I reference the LDS web site where I found the microfilm information? I already listed the microfilm number on my source defintion. Or perhaps I don't need a repository reference in this case and maybe should just put brackets around the field in the output definition to suppress printing it in my bibliography? 12. RE: [TMG] semi OT: subscription databases [1]
Because I am working on a major New England project I am a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society. I also use Ancestry.com a great deal for the census data. The NEHGS is at least a generation behind in search engine speed and capability and being a library/society it does not have the cash flow to really pump in the new databases. That said, they are steadily adding to both the pre-1850 vital records of MA database and the 1841-1910 vital records database and they do have a broad list of

Terry: Did you use LZW compression when you saved it? I don't know but assume Elements gives you that option. LZW compression is a "lossless" compression method; it doesn't degrade images. 15. Research tasks to EXCEL [1]
I would love to be able to send a list of tasks to excel. Then I could sort them by my own criteria, but most important is I could have them print horizontally, instead of vertically. I'd rather have on one line in columns: 1840Census:________ 1840 George L. I have the Welcome window and Tips and Hints unchecked for Startup in Preferences. However, occasionally (not every time) when I launch TMG a small message box pops up but it goes away before I have the chance to read the message. The only portion of the message that I have the chance to read before it goes away is the first word in the message which is "Check". Does anyone know what this message is? Thank you. Eldon
17. Re: [TMG] More children than listed [1]
Amen. If a program statement must be inserted, the description could use that well-known, but very inelegant, limiter word "selected", e. g. "Selected children". Marilyn In my opinion, TMG needs to make it much easier to control the output of these specific statements about the non-existence of persons "not in evidence", as well as statements about the knowledge of the user (or others) concerning such. The default should be to say nothing unless the user has taken positive steps to choose ot
18. RE: [TMG] RE: 6.01 Married names in reports [1]
Yes, that's what I was thinking would be helpful. Like for my census, I use the age in the suffix field, so it would be so easy on a spread sheet to see which census tags still need name tags to be attached. 20. Bulk Changes in Sources short footnotes [1]
I imported my data from UFT, generally accepting defaults. Many of my sources are U S Census data. The default short footnote for all these sources is <[NAME OF PERSON], ><[ITAL:][YEAR][:ITAL]><, [CD]> To make the footnote read more clearly, I would like to at least add the words U.S.Census after the [YEAR]. Is there a way to change all of these sources easily? I've looked at John's Utility, but cannot find how to define "find and replace" to do this. -- - - Jim - Houston TX - Jim@lantz.info
21. HELP! Project Explorer, Data Set or just give up and get a bottle of vodka? [1]
Hi Folks: I am in serious need of help! I am leaving soon on a research trip to Canada. I want to generate a report of ancestors who have events that took place in the various county areas I will be in. I have grandlines assigned for the two lines I need the reports on. I have tried List of Events in XX county ... that gives me both directs and all others. I tried to use Project Explorer to filter a group ... got a list of all the right folks, but then can't get the reports to stay limited to ONLY

23. RE: [TMG] Research tasks to EXCEL [1]
I putzed with this a bit just now, and there doesn't seem to be a good option because there's no way to produce the report in a columnar format. I can only seem to generate it in a list format (i.e. top to bottom, one subject after another), which doesn't do any good. I agree that I'd like to see the option of a columnar format for this report. It's just easier (to me) to group and track related searches that way. Takes up less paper, too ... -----Original Message----- From: Teresa Elliott [mailto:cheasa@

Doreen. I also had similar problems. What I've done is created a Folder called tmgbackup just under the Root directory (the path name would be [c:\tmgbackup]; then I told TMG 6.01 to backup to this folder. Then I use Roxio 7.5 to backup this data, works well, is easy and not complicated. Also, with all of your backups (copies) on your Main drive, then when you do a backup of your Main Drive, in my case Drive C; all of the TMG backups are included, so you have copies on a CD or other media as well as a
