1. [TMG] Unknown relatives [1]
To the List: My family began in this country in 1643 and along the way and until about 1830 we have uncovered a large number of people who we know are related but can't find the connection. (I call them my strays) Many of these we have considerable knowledge and information about. My question is how do other members handle these people? I can't connect them to any one in the main data set and yet I want to be able to print a single narrative report that will show all the info known about all of th

Steve, Every case is different and you have to decide based on the sitution and evidence or lack thereof > 1) you know who a person's grandfather was, but you're not sure which of the > grandfather's sons was the father. I have a relation tag to indicate a known or possible relationship. If you know the grandfather and the grandson use a relation tag with a citation and a memo indicating your thought on the possiblities of which son is the father > 2) you know who a person's father was,
3. Re: [TMG] handling unknowns [1]
Martha, My system is to enter a new John Baker. Then I use a custom tag called Same? I enter the new John Baker as P1 & William's son as P2. In the Memo I explain why I think these 2 people may in fact be the same person & I add any relevant Sources. I also enter Research Log tasks, linked to this tag, for records to be searched to try to prove/disprove the identification. The Same? tag shows up on the Person View of each of the Principals, alerting me to the possible link and making it easy to switch bet

Robin: I have thought of that since it is 3 lines (the Royal ones) that are the longest. I was thinking of 'wallpapering' my genealogy room with my charts but I would like them to go around the room since they are only 7' ceilings. I took over the formal living room (bedroom just got too small) .. I guess next is the family room which is the biggest room in the house. Maybe I should just build a separate building just for genealogy??? ... I wish!! Maybe we should have a genealogist-architect provide blu

For those of us who cannot travel to take advantage of these classes, why not videotape them and either have them available for sale or rent? It's great that you're sponsoring these wonderful classes, but what about those of us who just are not able to attend? Don't we get any benefits from our memberships? Arlene L. I think they extant records begin in 1937. And you might get lucky like I did. When they sent my grandfather's records, they included a copy of his Social Security Application (SS-5). Also, don't give up if they tell you they can't find it the first time. That's what happened in my case, but later I sent another request and th
9. [TMG] Spouseless relationships in FTM [1]
Chuck, I tried your suggestions, however, there is only one marriage tag for this individual with the correct spouse. She and the correct spouse are listed as principal's. I understand that if there is no ID # the person does not exist. I already tried merging to no avail. I tried editing the name of the spouseless relationship, but am unable to because it will not let me go to person view for this "spouse". If I do a report on the original person, it only lists one (the correct) spouse. I am still not
10. Re: [TMG] TMG 4.0d crashing Win95 at startup? [1]
It's not just a 4.0d problem, I've had the same problem since I started using TMG 4.0. And it doesn't happen consistently, but usually after the computer has been on for a while. It's not a conflict with Outlook, I don't use Outlook, I run AOL. It could be related to IE since I run it for internet browsing. Sometimes it happens when I have other applications running (like if I'm online and want to check out something in the database), sometimes there is nothing running. Mine has never rebooted
11. [TMG] Changing exhibit paths [1]
Good morning, all I'd like to issue a special thanks to John Cardinal for help he offered concerning my problem with exhibit paths. His utility did the trick in the wink of an eye, and appears to have done it perfectly. I have now changed the CD-ROM drive on all my machines to drive Z:\, and now all my external exhibits point to Z:, so hopefully I won't have this problem again. Thanks again, John. Peace, Part of the Tree, Greg
12. [TMG] Spousless Relationship from FTM 8.0 [1]
I am a new TMG user. I have just imported a test database using genbridge from FTM 8.0. I have a woman married to one spouse that has the named spouse as spouse #2 and spouse #1 (listed as spouseless relationship 1 in FTM 8.0) shows up as (??) with no id #. I cannot click on the individual to make changes to the name. I cannot merge with spouse #2 since there is no id #. I cannot delete the person, since I cannot click on the individual. Any suggestions for how to eliminate this problem? Thanks for your hel
13. Re: [TMG] Moving TMG to Laptop [1]
I would do a new install on the laptop. If you do not have a 4.0d disk, you can copy the correct upgrade from the desktop and apply it to the version you have on the disk or you can download a new copy from the internet and apply it to the version that you have on the disk. You can backup your files and restore them to the laptop in order to get your data. Also backup your System Configuration (Tools > Options > General > Backup) and restore them on the laptop if you have set anything special taht you wish

15. Re: [TMG] Archival printer inks - OT [1]
Lee, We have three HP ink jet printers and have been generally happy with their quality for most work, including smaller photographs (if the right paper is used). (We also have a Canon printer that we purchased to do banner printing.) But there is still the concern about longevity of the photographs and I recently purchased the Epson 2000P which uses archival ink which is definitely more expensive than the HP inkjet ink. I would expect to pay more for ink that is going to produce photos
16. RE: [TMG] GEDCOM ? [1]
Probably apocryphal, but it makes the point: English input to translation software, "The Spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." Output after translation to Russian and back to English, "The vodka is strong, but the meat is rotten." 17. Re: [TMG] Re: Digital Cameras [1]
I think people tend to go to one extreme or the other. Some buy more than they need, others way less. Besides, people have very different needs. Remember those awful little non-35mm cameras that were the rage in the mid 1980s? Why anyone would buy a camera that gave far worse, incredibly blurry photos than their old instamatic was a complete mystery to me, but I worked with people who just thought they were the greatest thing since sliced bread and who couldn't understand why I liked taking b&w photos with

19. Re: [TMG] Undocumented Material [1]
Judy--I keep everything in my database. Show things I have proven thru my sources and things I find not right thru souces and/or comments in a note for that person. I find it much easier to find info on the computer rather than rummaging thru stacks of paper. You could have a working database and transfer individuals that you "prove" to a second "proved" database. You could set up a "flag" for those persons that you have documented and then transfer them to a second database. Betty Ed Gentley wrote: >

21. Re: [TMG] Word Perfect [1]
Beverly When you select a report there will be a place on the Report Definition screen to select "File". Click on this option and then select the "down arrow" on the right side of the "File Type" box. If you scroll down there are several version of WordPerfect that you can select from. The program will ask you for a file name later on and this file will be in native WordPerfect format. If you do not select "Unique Footnotes" TMG will place the necessary information for native footnotes in the WordPerfect
22. Re: [TMG] citing a military pension packet [1]
For my grandfather's Civil War Pension File, I've used the source type Military Record (Manuscript) with the Record Title "Civil War Pension Records of Horace S. Crosby", Repository is the National Archives, and for Record Info "copy in possession of Frances M. Anderson". Then I put the details of the individual records (such as death certificate) in the CD. 23. Re: [TMG] citing a military pension packet [1]
Janice: Personally, I think the original documents are a better source than the transcription on a book. If you put them under a source of PENSION and in the citation detail described each documents information WITH the date of the appropriate document, you could get away with it. I would be sure that the original source includes all documents, dates, etc. that are included in the single source. Bonita ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, June
24. [TMG] Filing Systems [1]
I've been lurking and reading with interest the thread on FILING SYSTEMS. As someone else said one time, "there are as many filing systems as genealogists!" My question is, Has anyone any experience with and comments/advice on the software filing systems CLOOZ? I've taken a quick look at the concepts and I think it requires you to enter your documents as such and then cross-reference it to all individuals in the document. But this sounds to me like you are keeping a separate program going that c

It would seem to me that for the time you spend putting the question here and the time you will wait for an appropriate response you could tinker with the program and probably know how to print a good report before you get your answer.
