1. TMG-L: NSW BDM Index [1]
> By the way, what is this NSW BDM index and how is it set up. > Ken Nelson Ken, Thanks for your lovely long email. :-) Somehow actual paid work has distracted me but I have printed your email to enjoy when I get a chance. NSW BDM Index is the New South Wales (Australia) Birth Death and Marriage Indexes. The info is available on cds and fiche. Each entry gives the essential details (for birth it's something like Surname, Given Name/s, Year, Father's Name & Mother's Name and Registration District) p

Hi John, >> Sorry if I sound as though I am insulting someone's research ... but is this a serous problem. The average generation gap in my tree is just over 29 years. Even if it was as low as 22, 44 generations should cover a thousand years. Or have I misinterpreted the problem? << It is a limitation for those of us with long ancestries. Which isn't to say that I get frequent urges to destroy another forest so that I can print the whole smash. Still, TMG should handle whatever data its user wants

6. TMG-L: Problems with VCF and Kyocera printer [1]
Hello I've got a problem with printing from VCF on my Kycera FS-600. When I print a box chart (either ancestor or descendent), only the boxes print. The text is missing! If I have pictures included, they're printed normally. Text in text-boxes also print normally, but not the text in the "family boxes". Everything works fine if I try it on my HP DeskJet 820 Cxi, but absolutly NOT on the Kyocera. By the way, if I try a fan chart, the text comes out fine, also on the Kyocera. My question is; has anybody got a

8. Re: TMG-L: Where to put life story [1]
I agree with Lee (as usual!). And recommend gradually separating the bios into various tags, as that makes it easier to track at a glance where people lived, which jobs they had, and so forth. Not to mention that it's easier to source separate tags in a specific way. One thing you'll find, though, after separating your bio into multiple tags, is that the sentences that seemed perfect the first time around will not stay as perfect as you add additional tags to that person over the years. It's the same probl

10. TMG-L: Tag types, birth and death [1]
When the only information I have about any individual's birth is a reference to a baptism, I do not add a separate birth tag but just cite the source regarding the baptism. This works fine (unless as a newcomer to TMG I am missing something). For many indi8viduals I do not have independent death and burial information and would like to adopt a similar practice for death and burial tags. ie have the burial tag be the death tag with the date included in the pick list etcetera. However this does not work

14. TMG-L: Ordering event in reports - a caution [1]
This may or may not help on people buried before death. IF you don't have many burials compared to deaths (I don't, but some people have lots), run a report of your burial events. I did this to see whose burial dates were things like "1968" and "November 1970" and "after 23 April 1981". I then added sort dates to those and mainly took out the regular dates since I didn't know the actual date. If you've got them dated on the actual death date, though, this won't help much. Make a copy first if you have any doubts. Then import only one of the copies. If something goes amiss, you will have another copy in reserve. 17. Re: TMG-L: Totally off-topic: Is the Internet a genealogicalflea-market? [1]
Didn't mean to be at all insulting here. When I laugh about "Mrs. Einar" and so on, it's not really a laugh from imagined superiority, as I quite understand the frustration of wanting to include someone whose name isn't known (that was why I brought in Unknown Brewhouse, a character from my own database who is the entirely hypothetical father of several Brewhouses who spring from nowhere as adults and one of whom is my ancestor). But I'm sure you'll grant that Mrs. Einar looks a bit comic on a printout, and
18. TMG-L: Order of events [1]
Steven Chall asked a great question about the order events are printed out in a report, like a Register or Individual Report. I hadn't realized that there was a relationship between the sort-date and the order of printout. I would like to extend the question just a bit and ask whether there is a way to tell in advance where a non-dated memo (like a relationship tag memo) will print in a report. I would like to add the discussions about specific events in a reliable order. I would, for example, want to h

j.honeywell wrote: >The IGI is not a source. It is an index to original sources. Basically, I agree. Just as any index is not a source. However, you may find information in an index that you cannot immediately verify. So if you enter that data pending later verification, you do want to cite the source of it in case you don't get the added research for a long time. Thus when you print the data, and the source says the data was from an index, this will help remind you to do the research. ---------- Lee

21. Re: TMG-L: Citations - How do you Canadianize The Titles [1]
I am by no means an expert on this subject. But from a superficial examination it appears that custom contains both Mills and Lackey styles making it the best of both worlds. My prob occurred when on import my source items were broken down and some items placed in the wrong fields. I fixed some of them and some, I cut and pasted into the memo field and my cite sentence is . I found the latter to be the easiest solution for me. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------
22. Re: TMG-L: How to Handle Obituaries? [1]
Bob, The source of my obit is the newpaper date and obituary. Do you mean you put the actually contents in the CD? If so that would make for very long footnotes or endnotes. I agree with you that having the obituary as a tag can cause redundant reports. That's why I made a seperate tag so it could be selected or eliminated in reports. This also allows me to see at a glance in the person view that I have an obit for that person w/o having to check inside the tag for sources. But in TMG its what works

Thanks for the support! I keep plugging along. Did set up a test database and fool around with it. That helps the understanding curve this program takes, but isn't it great!
