Dear Naomi: I sure would ask you to look up Smiths for me, but it would be too cruel. I have been trying to get a copy of that book, but I was too far back in the line to get it. I am interested in a Mary Elizabeth Smith born in 1873-1874. There is one in Cocke County in the 1880 Census. I am ruling out the Marys the right age for my grandmother in Tennessee. Does anyone have a definitive list of the children of Thomas and Frances (Caldwell) Barnes. Most of the lists I've seen have a son, Isaac, born 1864. However, in the 1870 and 1880 Cocke Co censuses their child born 1864 is clearly a DAUGHTER named "Puss". In 1881 "Puss" Barnes married John Grooms in Cocke Co (I guess, the license was apparently never returned). Was "Puss" Barnes actually named RACHEL? Did Puss/Rachel later marry Jimmy Sutton? As many of the settlers in Cocke Co came through Greene Co: I have the book "Greene County, Tennessee Minutes of the Court of Common Pleas, 1783-1795 checked out until May 13 and will be happy to do look-ups until then.
