1. Hester GILES [1]
Hester was born in 1795 in SC and was living in Cocke Co TN in the 1850 census. Her father was John Giles of Virginia. She had a brother named Jesse (he married Phoebe Baxter) and a sister, Rhoda (she married James Baxter). My question is: Who was the father of Hester's children (Elizabeth, Perrin, Nicholas, Jane, Nathaniel and Reuben)? They also used the "GILES" name. In the 1850 census, she was listed as head of household. Thank you for any information you might have.
2. Cemetery question [1]
I have a question for the list. My great grandfather's brother John Franklin Holt died on Dec 9, 1915 from Typhoid Fever. His death certificate, which I got today, says place of burial "Salem" or "Salena", at least that is what it appears to say. Anyone have any idea if there is a cemetery by either of these names in Cocke County? Richard Holt
3. Eliza Bryant Shields [1]
I am posting this message to multiple lists in the hope that someone will be able to give me a clue to work on. I am looking for a 2nd-great grandmother, Eliza Bryant Shields. Both her husband's and daughter's death certificates give her name as Eliza Bryant. In fact, she was the informant for her husband's, so I'm assuming it is correct. Eliza's father was born in Tennessee and her mother in Indiana. All census records indicate that she was born around 1865-70 in Missouri. Sometime around 1895 she m

Please take the time to read my "novel". It is very important to me and I find that I enjoy reading postings like this when I see them. Our family histories are so interesting! Has anyone out there run across any Dungee/Dungey/Dungys or Lane/Laine/Laynes yet??? My line left Giles Co. for Southern IL-(Williamson Co.) by 1850-both lines are a deadend for me in either COCKE or Giles Co. They were in Giles before the IL move, but... at least one son was born in Cocke in the 1820's. Charles(Aubrey or Albe

Justice/Justus Genealogy The only suggestion I can make is that there are massive amounts of Justice families in Buncombe and Haywood Counties of NC. These counties are just over the mountain from Cocke Co., TN. Shirley McCoy brashergen@aol.com
9. Justus/Justice genealogy [1]
My great-grandfather was Joseph Marshall Justus. He lived part, if not most of his adult life in the Cocke County area. He died while living in Newport. I am looking for information about his mother, Sarah Fowler. I only know that the 1850 Sevier County TN Census said she was 27, and born in SC. Our family has thought for years that she was from SC, and I recently located a branch of the family who lives in SC. They think she came from Union County SC. I have no idea when, or under what circumst

11. Fowler Cemetery [1]
Does anyone have a copy of cemetery transcriptions from Fowler Cemetery near Newport TN? I think it is located in Cocke County. I am trying to find a couple of relatives, including my grandfather, and am not sure where to look. I know he was buried in Fowler Cemetery, and I am hoping some of the other missing ones may also be buried there. Thanks, Margaret
12. Re: Cemetery question [1]
There is a Salem Road (in Cocke Co) that goes between Highway 321 and into Greene Co. According to the Cocke Co map, there is one cemetery on that road, sort of NE of Parrotsville, if this is the church, here is the contact information. SALEM LUTHERAN CHURCH 3001 SALEM RD NEWPORT, TN (423)623-8086 There is also a brief mention of Salem in the book, OVER THE MISTY BLUE HILLS.
