Is there a Census Index available for White Co. for 1870 or 1900? I am searching for John J. LANCASTER - he was listed in the 1880 Census for White County in the 4th Civil District. A quick search turned up a likely match in Giles Co TN in 1900. Looks like the same family---I may be off base. So far have not found them in 1870. Maybe living with parents in GA.---? Thanks Geradine. I appreciate your time in looking this up for me. Amanda was my aunt and I am trying to fill in the blanks in my line. She was born in Sparta, Tn. in 1893 and married a William A. Crawford. She is supposed to have moved to Arkansas (I don`t know what county) and died in 1921. I have been unable to find any marriage or death record for Amanda in eityher state, TN or Ar. Good Day, I am looking for tax list information on a Sarah Dyson Mays (1784-1883) and her husband Robert Mays (1779-1846). The were living in White County in 1830. In 1836, Sarah inherited a slave from her father's estate (Barton Dyson, Iredell County, NC), and I am trying to see if they paid tax for this slave between 1836 - 1840. Thank you for your time! Ken, Try contacting the White County Public Library in Sparta. They have several records of cemeteries. Also cobtact the White County Genealogical - Historical Society. They are doing a cemetery book to be published this year. Both the library and the society have web sites. Hope this helps. Lenard, I think this might be the family you're looking for, however, it's not a marriage record. It looks like the family was in Arkasas at least by abt 1918, since the youngest child was born in that state. Amanda's age in 1920 (27) indicates she was born abt 1893. Hope this helps! Joseph Cannon Dew was listed in the White Co. Census in 1820, 1830 & 1840. My friend has reasons to believe that LaFosh Edward Dew grew up in White County and left before the 1850 to go to Todd Co. Tax roll ages were 21-50, so if a man was age 51, or lied about his age, and had no land, he would not appear on the tax list. I believe there were a couple of exceptions when dogs were taxed.
