Members of the list may be interested in the USGenWeb Project. Volunteers
from all over the world are setting up web pages to collect and make
available genealogy related information in their local area. The St.
Bernard Parish, Louisiana web page can be accessed at the URL below. I've
contributed some information on Philippe Toca, son of Joseph Alonzo Toca,
the first Toca to Louisiana.

The information below explains some basic information about the list. I'll
send it out on a regular basis.

Welcome to the TOCA mailing list! This mail list is for anyone interested
in the TOCA surname. TOCA's originated in a small barrio
(village-suburb?)in Santander, Spain and have located in Cuba, Spain,
Louisiana-USA, the Phillipines, and generally everywhere! This mail list is
maintained on the ROOTSWEB system - a nonprofit genealogy c
I wonder Carlos. I've found many different variations of names in old
records. The problem that I've seen has been the original records are
handwritten - including older records written in ink with feather quill
pens, and the ink has often bled through to the other side. When
researchers come along and transcribe these records, they often have to
guess at the original. I found my Joseph Alonzo Toca, dob 1767, listed as
S. Toca and also Joseph de Foca. I'd withhold judgement on the "Alfonzo"
possibility
Members of the TOCA mail list -
I just received an email from a marketing outfit that began -
"Independent Executive Recruiters

I assume everyone else on the list rec'd it as well. I apologize for this
"SPAM" that got through. Rootsweb, the mail list sponsor, has systems for
preventing this. Junk email is hard to stop and sometimes we have to live
with it. Just be aware that this stuff is not sent by the mail list sponsor
or me - it's unauthorized. Thanks.

I wanted to make everyone aware of the website by Carlos Berenguer
Torralbas. He has an extensive tree of his family including his Toca's and
their descent from Spain to Cuba.
The site address is a bit long, so copy it to your browser instead of trying
to type it in.

One of the members of the Cuban email list had the following comment:
"It gives a index of each family in each chapter of Historia de Familias
Cubanas so you can easily find the volume(s) you need. It also gives
the film numbers with which you can see the books on microfilm at the
LDS church and suggests that you get an inter- library loan of volumes
7-9 from your local library. I did this and borrowed volumes 8 and 9
free of charge
More email quotes about Santander and TOCA!
"When I first began contacting Toca's all over the world I received much
information about Santander. I've quoted some of the correspondence below.
"I started the TOCA-L@rootsweb.com list after much of this correspondance
was
received and I don't have the express permission of the senders to give
their information. I hope those who sent this information will identify
themselves to the members of the list and perhaps add to our knowledge!"

If any one is having trouble posting to our TOCA list, you
may want to read the technical information below.
Unfortunately, we can't send scanned photo's or graphics through
our mail list and we can't use fancy type like bold, italics or underlining.
However, if someone has graphics or photos to share with the
list, they can always tell everyone through the list and then email
to the other TOCA's that express an interest!
Please feel free to email me at toca@compuserve.com if you
have other problems.

Toca's in Louisiana may be interested to know where a Toca Patriarch is
buried. Philippe Toca, 1809 - 1884, was the seventh child of at least 9
children of Jose Alonzo Toca AKA Don Joseph Alonzo de Toca and Ysavel
Virginia DeLile. Don Joseph was the first Toca in Louisiana.
We have quite a bit of information on Philippe, my direct ancestor. His
tomb is a 20 minute drive from New Orleans, south of Chalmatte.
Burial is in the St. Bernard Catholic Church Cemetery (A/K/A

Some of our genealogy finds are like the suitor who was asked,
"So you want to become my son-in-law?" and replied:
"No Sir, but I want to marry your daughter."
Would anyone have information on Lawrence Toca? I came across him through
references in the "New Orleans Jazz, a Family Album", by Al Rose and Edmond
Souchon, Louisiana State University Press, Baton Rouge and London, Third
Edition. Reviewed at Los Angeles Public Library.

the 1920's. During the Depression, he was with many small groups, notably
