My grandfather attended college 1908-1912, not sure what the name of the school was. Was there a Rusk College in Cherokee Co then, or would he have been at the Jacksonville Baptist College? He was preparing to be a Baptist minister. Rusk College opened in in Sept.1895 in Rusk,Texas and was opened under the name Cherokee Baptist Ass. The name was changed several times and in 1918 it became Rusk College. The school closed in 1928. Cathy: He probably would have attended Lon Morris College in Jacksonville at that time. To my knowledge, there has never been a college in Rusk. There are other higher education schools around, but not in Cherokee County. Hope this helps. Brenda

Am looking for information about Owens Chapel Church (Baptist, I think) which was located in or near New Salem, TX. It was there in 1938 when my G/GM, Lela Mariah Buckner Owens died, but is not there now. Would like to learn more about this little church, its history, etc....would appreciate any leads. Thanks to Betty and others who responded. We now know: The East Texas Baptist Institute was discussed in 1890, activated in 1893, and established in Rusk in 1894 by the Cherokee Baptist Association. the school opened in October 1895 with an enrollment of 147. The school was called the Academy of Industrial Arts in 1907, Rusk Academy in 1916, and Rusk College in 1918.
