2. [TXREDRIV] John do you remember? [1]
July 4th is coming up and we are trying to make it back to Avery for the Tomato Festival and all the celebration. My mind drifted back to some July 4ths in Avery. In the early 30's our fireworks consisted of things Mom made. She would take cloth and tear it in strips. It was usually old Cotton sheets. She would make a tight ball stitching every layer, until it was about the size of a softball. She would make two of them and soak them in Coal Oil for about 3-4 weeks. She would keep them submerged all t
3. Re: [TXREDRIV] Joseph Wortham in RR Co [1]
I am not into genealogy, but I was born and raised in and around Red River County, and I knew a Joe Wortham family at Detroit many years ago. He was a shoe cobbler there for many years, and was a very good friend of my family. If I am not mistaken, he still has a daughter-in-law living there. If I remember right, he had a brother about his same age living there too. If my Dad were still alive, he would be 104 years old, and Mr. Wortham would have been about the same age. Sorry I am not much help, but this m

Louis Igo was a witness in 1899 for my ancestor, John Cooper, in his petition for a Confederate pension. Both served in Co. D, 29 TX Cavalry Regiment, led by Charles DeMorse. In Louis' testimony, he states he has lived in Red River Co. nearly 50 yrs. and personally known John Cooper since 1861. Were messmates in Co. D. Louis states that they were together in the following fights--Greenleaf Prairie, Elk Creek, Prairie Grove & Cabin Creek (2nd, 3rd, 4th July 1862) all in the Cherokee Nation. Pison Sprin
5. Re: [TXREDRIV] Another Possible Book [1]
I had family in Madras/Clarksville in the 1890's and would like to have a book covering that period. However, I would prefer the 1890's and not just the year 1890. 6. [TXREDRIV] Red River Marriages [1]
Would there be someone out there who could check for a marriage in the Red River Co. are anytime after 1880 for Penelope E. COLLIER MORRIS? She was only 47 as a widow in 1880 and I am sure she must have remarried. 9. Re: [TXREDRIV]Roberts family [1]
Jo, Yes, I meant Tom Roberts, I have had Tom Watson on my mind. Sorry about that. I did get much or most of the information from the Dale book, but do not have one myself. I thought I would wait for the new one, but that is a long 2 or 3 years away. I have a affinity for the family names of Hopewell that I recall from my youth and latch onto them. Such as Gandy, Mowery, McNabb, Monkhouse, Stanley, Fryar, Blassingame, and off course my people, Watson and Giddens. In the picture, Tom Robert
10. Re: [TXREDRIV] Avery Library [1]
Jim I was sure wrong about the name of the library. It seem's they haven't given it a name yet. Don't know where I got that but sure was wrong. Debbie and I are planning on making the event on Fri & Sat-4-5th. Hope to see you there. 11. Re: [TXREDRIV] Mathias Mowery rambling. [1]
Beverly, Jim Edd Monkhouse married a first cousin of mine, Billie Frances Fryar (her mother was a Watson) I am not sure if it was Jim Edd's first marriage or not. They later divorced. I visited Jim Edd many time in Regency Nursing Home before my dad died this past Oct. I have a love for visiting anyone with a connection to Hopewell. I showed Jim Edd a picture I had of Billie Frances on a pretty white horse. He said he gave the horse to her and she loved the horse more than him (with
12. Re: [TXREDRIV] Orphanage [1]
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!! I found 2 of my missing Huddlestons, thanks to you guys. You are the Bestest!!! Which leads me to a question??? Does anyone know of an Orphanage or Church Home that my GGAunt would have moved herself & 7 children into in RRCo (or surrounding area) after her husband died of Malaria in 1929? She and the 7 kiddos are on the 1930 census. I just heard a family story tonight that says she became the cook and raised her children in an Orphanage or something similiar
13. Re: [TXREDRIV] Crains & Whiteman [1]
I have a great aunt that married a Whiteman and they had a ranch in Red River County, sure would like to know what happened to this branch of the family. I think my mom still has a Whiteman cousin living in Clarksville. I will have to ask her. The aunt I am speaking of was named: Ada May Taylor Whiteman, she was my grandfather's sister. She raised him after their parents died. Her husband's name was Chester Oliver Whiteman, I think. Are any of these Whitemans ya'll's relations. Cathy Fort Worth, Texas
14. Re: [TXREDRIV] Mathias Mowery rambling. [1]
Jim: The J.R. Mowery buried at Concord Cemetery is James "Richard" Mowery, son of Mathias. Richard married my g. grandfather's sister Susan Thoms 3-31-1868, after the death of Richard in 1881 Susie married Robert Monkhouse. Frances one of the daughter's of Richard and Susie Mowery, married Charley "Bud" Monkhouse who is the father of Jim Edd Monkhouse, confusing yes but maybe this puts together some connection with Hopewell. 15. [TXREDRIV] Adoptions [1]
Hi everyone, Here is a quick question that I thought I would never ask. If I were to discover that my grandparents had adopted a child, (not my father but one of the siblings) would there be a way to discover when the adoption took place? I know this would have taken place around 1926 in Red River county. I just don't know how the laws are concerning adoptions. The concerned individual died in the 1980s. I'm not so much concerned about the identity of the individual as I am just proving that this individu

20. Re: [TXREDRIV] Adoptions [1]
Hello, My youngest son, Cory, is adopted. In Colorado, an adopted child is, also, given the same rights as birth children. They are given revised birth certificates with the adoptive parents listed as THE parents. Several years ago, I helped my son find his birth parents. In my FTM, Cory is listed as our son AND a descendent of all of my husband's and my ancestors - just like our other two children. Additionally, I have included what I know (and am learning) about the ancestry of his birth parents

Bob Moore of MS, Thanks Bob. However I do not remember hearing of a Reynolds Funeral Home in Detroit. As far as that gone, I don't remember a funeral home in Detroit. Maybe Sam, Mary or Sharon etc can be of help. I will also send this to Sharon since she is not receiving Rootsweb site. Jim Giddens Paris, Tx p.s. Bob Moore of Clarksville (county road) is on the Hall of Fame Committee with me. He is actually Robert E Moore about in his 60s or so. Do you know of him or is he related to you. ---
