Hi Judith:
I'm not exactly sure about the search algorithm on FreeCEN but I work with
databases for a living so I do have some expertise. If a researcher wants to
find all those born in Lanarkshire then the search would be on the Chapman
code field and not on the place field. If it says Lanarkshire in the place
field then a county search will not find them. That's why.
Best wishes, Irene

I wasn't posting to you. Just in general to our Scotland volunteers.
Sometimes the instructions get confusing if it's not specified. I'm

Hi Irene,
It sounds as if you have not checked any of the pieces I transcribed as I always write my name and email at the beginning of the Mynotes file (or you don't look at the Mynotes files!).
Regarding St. Mary Carlisle, it's called exactly that, some enumerators abbreviate it to St. Mary's. A local would know what he is talking about, but a researcher not that familiar with Cumberland may not. Or someone may search by birth place Carlisle, and would not find this entry. So I think St Mary Carlisle sho
Dear All,
A desperate plea on behalf of all checkers and validators - PLEASE, PLEASE,
PLEASE do NOT use XXX, question marks, brackets, parentheses or . when you
encounter illegible entries. Set the appropriate query flag in the correct
column (or in the case of required fields, enter the default hyphen for
names, relationships, 999 for age or UNK for the Chapman Code).
Use of blanks, x's, full stops, brackets, parentheses or question marks is
NOT an acceptable alternative and is NOT used in the Free

I use a good spam filter, and you probably do the same.
I have whitelisted you and that means that I will receive all the emails you send to me.
I would appreciate it if you would whitelist my email address: janet@janetsfamilies.f2s.com in your spam filter.
If you don't have a spam filter, I can recommend SPAMfighter. It is a highly effective free spam filter for Outlook and Outlook Express.

At the risk of causing further confusion, while seeking clarification, I would like to be Devil's Advocate.
Terry's response (29.01.09) implies that checkers/validators/co-ordinators have expertise that will resolve the doubts raised by various transcribers just by flagging it and not spending time to provide a better answer. What is wrong with transcribers helping them out by putting their thoughts in column Y, if they have the time? The problem I see, about this expertise, is that I have checked one piec
I have a few cases where the Relationship to Head Household is listed as 'Husband' & 'Wife' for 2 HH members.
Taking the husband's entry, this implies the wife is 'Head' but taking the wife's entry would imply the husband is
'Head' (unless they are not monogamous).
How do we deal with the ambiguity or does it matter ('as is' applies) ?
I would love a copy of the image.

Dear Tony,
I would include 'St Catharines Estate' with the address of schedule 1 only.
There is no 'evidence' or ditto marks to support including it with
subsequent households, even though it is likely some of the following
households are part of St Catharines Estate. There is no note or comment
later on saying the end of St Catharines Estate has been reached. (The note
written under the address of schedule 1 regarding schedules 1-56 suggests
the note was added after 1894 when the Estate was added to the H
Hi Judith
I have had another look through the Tutorial and on-screen instructions,
but can only find the one about changing ID and Name. No mention of
how to change Drive letter. I'm using the WINCC2.31 installer version
downloaded from the FreeCEN project page, which unzips to give WINCC.exe
(version date 2004), but it seems the new version may add the drive
letter change facility. I'll contact Brenda off-list.

Dear Marie,
It does apply to all of the spreadsheet except for question marks in Column
Y (Notes). The checker and the validator will BOTH view the queried item so
setting the query flag is really all that is needed.

Looking at the 1851, John B Fell, Marianne Fell, Emily J, George N,
Frederick ? ... right ages, same occup, same place.
And there's a "Suitable" marriage in 1844 in FreeBMD.
However, that doesn't get around the 1861 which looks like Hancuss,

the H like the H in Head, and not like the M in Mar, Mary or Michael

Good luck

Hi Petra:
I may not have checked any of your pieces. At the moment, I'm validating a
piece that you say you've transcribed.
The validator removes almost all of the transcriber comments since most
issues are resolved by a combination of the checker and validator. The
checker is unable to remove the transcriber's notes so the validator does
see every last one of them.
In this piece there were many transcriber comments regarding places or
parishes in Carlisle where the enumerator did NOT specify Carlisl
