Does anyone know anything about the South Shields Union Workhouse - my grandfather and his siblings were sent there in about 1900 - 1905. He ran away and the youngest was sent by the Guardians to St.Josephs Convent Darlington. Later she was adopted.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hello Adrian,
Records for the County of London Lunatic Asylum are held by the London
Metropolitan Archives.
The reasons for admittance to a "lunatic asylum" could be varied and vast,
ranging from a number of disorders that we would not consider "mental
illness" by todays standards.
Do you have Joseph STOCKTON'S death certificate?
This would give you some idea of the reason for him being admitted, although
the admission registers would ideally tell you more.

I have located an 8 year old child whom I believe to be a younger sibling of
my grandfather in the Tavistock Union Workhouse. She is there in 1881 and

Does anyone know how I go about finding records from the Tavistock Union
Workhouse? What kind of records did they keep on these people? Did they
keep records on where they went when they left there?
Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hello,
I don't know if anyone can help me, but I am trying to find out if Fairfield Hospital is situated at 380 Rochdale Old Road.
My Great Grandfather died at this address and I have been informed that it was the Workhouse and he was sent there by his youngest daughter who did not want to look after him in his old age. He died there in 1928 aged 78, Richard Barlow.
I am not very well informed on workhouses, where they also used as hospitals?
Many Thanks

There is a description of Jepson's Hospital on the Ripon Genuki page at
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Ripon/RiponHistory.html
Jepson's hospital was founded and endowed in 1672 by Zacharias Jepson, for

I would like to know about Leicester workhouse; Annie Ball her children and
Dan Merrick (alias the 'Elephant Man'). He was there for nearly 2 years
until he went to the freak shows. At age 18.
Hi Harry,
The surviving records for Leicester Workhouse are held at Leicestershire
Record Office in Wiston Magna. I would suggest that a visit there would be
useful, particularly as they have the Admission and Discharge Registers for
the period when Merrick was in the Workhouse. As Merrick was a local lad,
they may a
I feel I should pass on to the list the very sad news of an Arson attack on the Victorian Grade II Listed Building, formerly known as Aston Union Workhouse.
The Building was empty having been vacated by Highcroft Hospital, and was awaiting redevelopment. The fire, reported on by the Sutton Observer, caused severe damage to the first floor and the roof.
There has been no news to state if the redevelopment will be able to continue, but of course fingers crossed that it will.

CAMBRIDGE UNION WORKHOUSE in the 1830s-1840s?
Hi Leone
There are a few records for Cambridge Union from that date. The main ones
are Settlement and Removal Orders - these are where the person claiming
relief was not a resident of the Union, so the Board of Guardians would have
taken legal action to get them sent back to the Union they did belong to.
There are also some Bastards Maintenance orders up to 1840.
All these records are at Cam
I have just got my fathers birth certficate and it shows that his mother was
living at 56 Fortess Road, St. Pancras. It also showed that she was a
general servant of St. Pancras..Info about the above enquiry is that my
father was born out of wedlock 16 Dec 1902 @ Queen Charlottes Hospital
Marylebone Road. His mother Florence Elizabeth Warden. I believe she kept
my father until he came to Canada in Apr 19, 1913 as a Home Child. My
grandmothers family did not know my father existed until she died in 1951.

Hi Mickey
My grandmother's 4 sisters were put in Chorlton Union and then they were
placed in Styal Cottage Homes, the years being 1904 to 1907. In 1907 they
came over to Canada with the MacPherson Org.
and placed at the Marchmont home in Belleville, Ont. I have some addresses
