Hi Michael,
Well, thats strange - this hospital does not appear to be on the HOSPREC
site.
More strange because the hospital is still there, situated off Northgate
Street in Great Yarmouth. It is now administered by the James Paget NHS
Trust.
I would contact the Norfolk Record Office for details of records they hold,
if any.
Details are: Norfolk Record Office, Gildengate House, Anglia Square, Upper
Green Lane, Norwich. NR3 1AX Telephone: 01603 761349
http://www.norfolk.gov.uk/council/departments/nro/nroinde
Thanks Michael,
I hadn't seen this site before, but it does certainly make interesting
browsing.
All the best, Jan

Hi,
Melton Lunatic Asylum was originally erected as a House of Industry for the
parishes of Loes & Wilford Hundreds. It became Suffolk County Lunat
> I have just found a family who I think are my grt grandparents on the 1881

Hi Gloria,
The Croydon Workhouse in 1881 was in Queens Road and subsequently became
called the Queens Road Homes, although this name was not used until th
Can anyone tell me about the above named workhouse?
My grandmother Sarah Wilkinson, and her younger sister Annie

- Are there any photos of the workhouse?
Any help and direction would be much appreciated!

Hi Jill,
Do you know if it was Myrtle Street in Hoxton or Hackney?
I don't recall seeing that home mentioned in the catalogues for the Hackney
and Shoreditch Unions which covered the two addresses. Was it an independent
home?
You could check it out in a contemprary street directory which will tell you

Hi all
I have a couple of questions regarding Styal House, I went to the Workhouse
web site and found that it was operated by the Chorlton Union, but I gather
that the Poor Law Unions no longer existed in the 1950's, so who was running
Styal House or Homes in the 1950's and what role did it have in the
community. My mother was in Styal house in the 1950's and I am trying to
trace the records of her stay, so who would hold them.

I can't reproduce all the info here as its too large, but there is an

Perhaps you could kindly pass this on to the person enquiring?

Hi Sally,
There are two places called Minster in Kent, one in the Thanet Union and one
in the Sheppey Union.
The Sheppey Union has a birth register including 1867, but Thanet's birth
register only appears to have survived up to 1866!
The records for both Unions are at the Centre for Kentish Studies in

Hi Bill and Jenny,
Scottish records are very different from English and Welsh, mainly due to
the fact that the poorhouse system itself was so very different. It was
based more on a charity system of giving relief and not by the Poor Law
Amendment Act 1834.
Glasgow City Archives are currently in the process of entering the names of
paupers applying for relief on to a database which is complete to 1901 and
in progress to 1910. There are about 370,000 entries
so far.
There is a similar database of applications

Margaret,
You mention completing your training in 1957 - only 9 years following the

Do you have some old stories of the Hospitals and services provided then?
I worked in a hospital formerly a workhouse, where many of the patients
refused admission due to the continuing stigma. The wards were very old and
facilites far less than the new modern buildings, but I have to say that the
atmosphere and comraderie were far greater than in the new air conditioned
luxury (this is just my experience). Although I a

Dear Mary
Thank you very much for that information, I wonder could you tell me whether
like the Union Workhouse's the Union Infirmary was also for poor
underprivelidged people. My ggrandfather who had been in the Coldstream
guards for almost 10 years, until being stepped down as unfit for duty, was
described on his death certificate as a porter.
Best regards Diane

Hi Jackie,
Was this hospital in Leytonstone in East London? If so , there are two
likely archives you could try. The first is the London Metropolitan Archives
who have good historical information on many London hospitals. The local
archives service for that area is Waltham Fore

Matilda Woods gave birth to Emily in 1879 in this workhouse.
Had a look at the records for the Bridgend W.H. and find they do not start until 1894.
The Cottage homes begin in 1879.
Also found 7 Matilda's on St. Caths that may fit birth, 4 in optimal birth year 1854 BUT I do not know the parent(s).
Isn't genealogy a wonderful relaxing pastime? 8-()
