Hello list members:
My name is Mike Higney and I am new to this list.
I am wondering if records exist for Irish workhouses in county Donegal
please? I am particularly interested in lists of those living at the
workhouse as I would like to know if any of my HIGNEY ancestors spent time
at a workhouse? My ancestors lived in the areas of Donegal near Castlefinn,
Stranorlar, and Killygordon!
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Mike Higney
Hi everyone,

Any help would be really appreciated.
Best Wishes,

Hello Marilyn and other newish Listers,
Welcome to the list:-)
I set up this list in March of this year, after receiving some workhouse
requests, and it took off from there. The list has many knowledgeable
subscribers, who often offer help, assistance and advice to posted requests.
In order to record this information for future reference, we set up the web
site now located at http://www.workhouses.co.uk It has grown tremendously
since April and many people have submitted information to be included

Hello:
I'm interested in the Hanwell Asylum, (now St. Bernard's, Ealing?) where I
believe one of my ancestors worked as a nurse from 1893. Does anyone know
if there is a published history of this hospital; I'm interested in the
conditions at the time, from the point of view of both staff and patients.
Thank you - Renee

Hi Andrea,
There is nothing specific to illegitimate children by this time. Earl
Hi Mary
Thanks for your reply. I have a little more info for you as I have her birth
& marriage certificate. She was born 'Connie' to a 'flower seller' and the
father's name section is blank. She married giving her name as
Constance(making me think she never saw her own b cert?). On the marriage
cert the' father's section' is blank.
She married in Kingston registry office.Unusual then? 1928? In 1929 she had
her only child in St James's hospital Balham (birth cert. only shows an
address(46 Ousely Road). I am
Hi Yvonne,
The staff registers for both these workhouse are held at the Public Record
Office in Kew, London and can only be searched in person.
If the staff records are anything like the other workhouse records in the
PRO then it is essntial to have lots of information before searching them as
they are not indexed and can be copious.
If you have rough dates when they were actually employed then it should be
possible to find something for them. I have found copies of job
applications, resignation letters a
Hi Everyone!
My interests centre around Pershore Union WH, the main people of interest
are the Twigg and Price families there.
Also looking for Alfred Twigg who probably went to Stourbridge from Pershore
around 1869. He had a family there, including a daughter whose married name
was Mrs A Dutton. He died when 79 in 1928 in Stourbridge. He seems not to
be in the 1881 census records.
Any ideas or information would be much appreciated.

Hi,
I am new to this list, and was pointed in your direction after posting the message below on the London List

Does anyone know of the Workhouses in the area at the time? Has any of the 1871 census

Hi listers,
Some of my BULLEMENT ancestors seem to have had some commerce with this workhouse. My gg-grandmother Margaret died there in 1875, and her young daughter, Mary, was living there in 1881 as a pauper inmate aged 8. Has anybody ever consulted records of this workhouse ?
I will be returning to Yorkshire towards the end of the month for a few days and am likely to fit in a visit to the archives in Beverley. It would be a great help if I knew what I could expect to find beforehand.
thanks in advance

Catherine WALTERS said to have been born about 1852 at Aberdare GLA this is the only information I have taken from the 1881/1891 census both say Aberdare as place of birth.
I also have her marriage certificate which has no information in the fathers name and occupation box.
I can only assume she was illigitimate so
> Mary: Would Bastardy Bonds be available for 1874?
No - they were most prolific during the 1700's and declined greatly in the
first part of the 19th C. Once the Poor Law Unions were set up in 1835,
individual parishes were no longer concerned with pursuing fathers and bonds
cease to be found.
