I understand this Workhouse is in Brighton area. Could tell me about this
place - I am particularly interested in the 1881 Census entry for a Michael
Morrison, age 80, a retired Bricklayer's helper who was resident there at
the time, and where one might access records or further information.
Hi Freda,
Race Hill is indeed a place in Brighton (with a horse race course on it).
As an 80 year old inmate of the workhouse, Michael is most likely to have
been there as he was unable to care adequately for himself.
Hi Stephanie,
Yes, its posted and you should have had it by this morning.
Although its a large letter, it was posted first class.
I've included details regarding Ringwood, and a few extra's:-)
Please let the list know how you get on, as we're thinking of you, and wish
you all the best.
Good Luck!
All the best, Jan

Barnet is partly in Hertfordshire and the surviving records are at
Hertfordhsire Record Office in Hertford. What dates are you looking at?

I received this message as well, it confused me. Who is this Derbysgen and
where are they going to meet in Ontario, Ottawa, England??? What contact do
they have with the BHC? Are they going to set up a Web site. I really didn't
understand how they targeted us to get together. Can you help, or tell me
more about this.

In 1930 the Workhouses were abolished >> I didn't realise this! Must
revise a page in my book...
Thank you!
Could you tell me when the practice ended of sending young women into a
mental hospital for having a baby out of wedlock?

Hi Howard,
The London Metropolitan Archives have staff records for Shoreditch Union
covering the period 1861 to 1930. If Mrs Mais was dismissed (as seems likely

Hi Isabel,
This is a meeting in Canada, not England organised by the Listowner for the
Derby rootsweb list. It is an open invitation to members of all lists who
have a common interest in Genealogy for a Get-together.
It sounds like its going to be quite a large Get-together
Although it is a social occasion, I'm sure that many of the people attending
will be discussing varying aspects of their research:-)
If anybody is interested in attending, please contact Jayne on the address

Hello Everyone,
I noticed this morning references to the London Metropolitan Archives. I am wondering if someone could explain just what records are held in these Archives. Are they open to the public and what is the address?
Thank you.

Hi Margaret,
The surviving records for Saffron Walden are at Essex Record Office in
Chelmsford, but there is very little from the 1840's, in fact only the
General Minutes Books survive for this date and they are unlikely to make
any mention of individual orphans in the workhouse.

Hi Mary
Thanks for the message and the help and advice you gave me,I shall certainly be writing to the London Metropolitan Archives.I had another look at the death certificate as you suggested and in the occupation column it states that she was a nurse along with her address,so I think she must have been admitted as a patient as at the time she was living with her daughter and her family. Her marital status is not shown although I know that she was a widow at the time.
Thanks again for your help

Hi Maria,
Tendring Union was in Essex and the main record of interest to you would be
the deaths register which covers 1839-1930 for deaths in the workhouse.
The records are held at the Record Office in Colchester, Essex.

Hi Mary,
Thankyou for the information.
Sorry for my ignorance but are you saying that St Martin's in the Field
Workhouse in Castle Street have separate registers than the normal
district records of St Martin's in the Field and are also held at the LMA?
Thanks - Simon

Hi Simon,
The Workhouse did keep its own registers of who was admitted to the
workhouse, who was born and died there etc etc. Not all of these records
have survived and they are separate from any registers kept by churches in
the area or by the registrar of births, marriages and deaths in t
