1. Re: [CHERN] UKR-CHERNIGOV Digest, Vol 3, Issue 93 [1]
To Beth...re family search there are a lot of Ginsburgs, but Isador ( I think) and Rose lived in Cedar Rapids Iowa from sometime in the early 1900's They were very close friends with my Chernigov grandparents....They had three sons. Herman is still in C.R. so you might want to check with him. ************** One site keeps you connected to all your email: AOL Mail, Gmail, and Yahoo Mail. Try it now. 3. [CHERN] New member researching Fagin, Staroselsky, Brahinsky, Gisnsberg, Greenblatt, Cohen [1]
Hi- I am a new member of the UKR-CHERNIGOV mailing list. The Chernigov names that I am researching are Fagin/Feigen, Staroselsky, Brahinsky, Ginsberg, Greenblatt and Cohen. The towns in Chernigov where I know that my relatives had family are Voronezh, Sosnitsa and Krolevets. I know that some of the Fagins and Staroselskys (some of whom changed their name to Stein) came to New York between 1905 and 1911. Some Brahinskys also came to the US. I think that some relatives remained in Chernigov. The other n
4. [CHERN] your families [1]
Hi Beth, Greater details have allowed me to look through my records with a bit more direction. First of all, you are extremely lucky to be able to trace your family back to the 1830s. Serious record-keeping in Ukraine did not begin until a generation later, and there are gaps in the records for many towns. So I would not have access to records from the time that the GREENBLATTs or the COHENs entered your family. Someone in the group has access to early census records from Chernigo

Not sure if you're aware of this Canadian Naturalization search site, but Ithought it would interest you all. A lot of people who left Chernigov went to Canada. When you search for a surname, you'll notice that there are multiple pages from 1914-1932. You'll need to input the surname in multiple spots. In other words, the surname Smith might show up: Slom to Smyth Smit to Snow --------------------------------------------------------------------------Canadian Naturalization Records - 1914-1951The JGS-
10. Re: [CHERN] City/Town Ruchawo? [1]
Dear Chernigov Research Group: My elderly ancestor traveled to America in 1913 from his home in Voronesh, Gluckhov, Chernigov, to visit his grown children for a year before returning to Russia. For the first time (due to a spelling error), I was able to locate his passenger record. His birthplace on the manifest was written as "Ruchawo." This is the first time that I've come across this town associated with my family. I looked on a map and discovered that there is a "Rogachev" located just no

16. [CHERN] FAGIN, STAROSELSKY, BRAGINSKY, GINSBERG, GREENBLATT & COHEN [1]
Beth, None of the names you mention are rare names in Tsarist Chernigov, so it is hard to help you without more specificity. For instance, GINSBERG could have been GINBERG, GINZBERG, KINTSBURG, KINZBURSKI, while COHEN was probably KAGAN but might have been KAGANOV or KAGANOVSKII. There were even two different STAROSELSKY families in Nezhin. So if you take the families one at a time, and tell us what you know or suspect about the names of people in that family and their rough dates

Hello I'm writing in the hope that you might be able to help me in the search for the origins in the Ukraine of my father-in-law and his parents. The name by which the family was known after they came to the UK c 1904 was Sayevitch or, subsequently, Sayers. We have been able to find no links at all for the former name, and we wonder whether perhaps the name was Savitsky. 21. [CHERN] Still looking for Mankoff origins... [1]
When I was a child my paternal grandfather, Samuel Mankoff (born in Riga, 1883) told me that our family had originated "near Kiev." At some point I decided -- for reasons not remembered -- that "near Kiev" must have meant Chernigov. So I've stayed with this list for years. I have found Mankoffs originating in Vinnitza, Lutzyn, Grodno, Nemonaytzy, Kolvey (Kovel?), and -- oddly, it seems, "Cartus Barozo." Though Vinnitza is relatively close to Kiev, I don't believe these are "my" Mankoffs. All "my" e

My mother maiden9s name was Rochlin. She came from Chernigov. I think that the village she was born in was called Drokov near a town called Suraj. The spellings of these names may very well be wrong Her father9s name was Menachem Mendel Rochlin. His wife was Rose or Raizel. I don9t know her single name. Menachem Mendel brought his family to London at the beginning of the last century. One branch went to the USA, I believe to New York. I9d be interested if anyone knows anything about the Rochlins. > >
