Hello Upper Canada
You have not heard from me for ages, but sometimes something
you did in the past, catches up with you unexpectedly.
In 1999 I posted to this list a little article a found in a book called
"Places in Ontario" by Nick and Helma Mika, and it said:
"Carlsruhe, community, Carrick Township, Bruce County,
settled originally by German people, the small community
situated 7 miles southeast of the county seat of Walkerton,
was named after a city in the west of Germany."

I'm sorry, I can't help you with your Camerons, but you can help me. Who is
the author of "The History of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Counties"? I'd
like to try to find a copy. My Alexander Scott came to Martintown, Glengarry
County about 1827 from Alloa, Scotland. I have dates etc., but nothing about
who he was. Thanks, Ann
Dear List
We would like to contact anyone who is acquainted with Donald (Hugh ?) and Nancy CAMERON who settled in Finch Twp. in 1808.
>From "The History of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Counties" we are told that the CAMERONS and McMILLANS came out from Scotland in a group in 1802 and they first wintered in Lochiel Twp. Donald Hugh Cameron settled in Finch Twp. in 1808. Their son Duncan was the first white male child born in Finch Twp.

Hello folks,
I want to take this opportunity to thank all those subscribers
who took the time to help me lift the fog from this issue.
I did have him on my list of possible Hessian soldiers, but now
with your help I know that he originally came from Switzerland
to America, and joined the Butler's Rangers early in the AmRev.
Thank you all for your help

Hello Edna
There is no one list of Loyalists, and it is a
misconception to think that there is.
The first place you should look for a possible Loyalist
ancestor is in the land records, for Loyalists and their
families were granted land in accordance with their

I am looking for info on Butlers in the 1851 Census in Lincoln,
Haldimand, and Welland counties.
I have already looked on the Olive Tree genealogy site. I would be
interested in somebody doing lookups for me in book indexes or microfilm. I
looking for a 17-20 year old William Butler with a Butler family in 1851.
Is there any Butler descendants with ancestors in these counties

Hi:
Punched in a search on Google - and found several sites that will give
information on the above company. Looks like they were an iron foundry
and one of the partners Milne was a director of several companies.
Didn't read it all - but interesting. Used burrow + stewart + milne to
access the information. There is also a site with a picture of a scale
- hope this helps. Shirley Heaton, BC
One small comment --
William D Reid did not 'find' some index cards -- he created them. Their
basis was his extraction of names and dates from thousands of original
Orders-in-Council in Record Group 1 at the Archives of Ontario. In addition,
he often supplemented family information from other sources in RG 1 and some
early church records that were available to him at the time. Tom Wilson of
Hunterdon House Publishing was instrumental in making this incredible
collection widely accessible in book form, with
In studying my family back to the earliest days of the town of York and the
surrounding area, I have come across two men by the name of Samuel ARNOLD. I
wonder if anyone can point me to sources which might help me to figure out which
one was which.
The first is Samuel ARNOLD who married Dorothy Storring on 1 Jan 1806 at St
James. Dorothy Storring was granted lands as the daughter of a loyalist on the
7th concession west of Yonge Street in either Vaughan or York Twp in 1807. These

Thank you, Lorine, Norman, and Linda,
for your information on the Butler's Rangers.
I just wanted to state once more that I am not after
information on the Rangers, I have plenty of material myself,
but I am looking for information on this particular
Corporal or even Sergeant Joseph SENN,
whose name I found on the Butler's Rangers Muster Roll
on the official Butler webpage.
Cheers,

I'd like to tie up loose ends, and here is one somebody

I did check the Butler's Rangers Muster Rolls and found
a Joseph SIRN listed as Corporal in Capt. Tin Brook's Comp.

In another Muster Roll of Butler's Rangers also found through

Problem as I see it, nobody seems to know where Joseph

New to this List - have just discovered a birth in 1852-3 for a Margaret MILLER/MILLAR. Her parents
were William MILLAR and Jane A. HALCRO who were Orcadians, they married in Orkney in 1850. Quite
surprised to find a probable child of this marriage, William died only a few years into the
marriage, and there were no children noted as being born in Orkney.
The 1861 Census for Orphir, Orkney shows Margaret MILLER as 8 years old born Canada, the 1871 census
finds her aged 19, born Canada, but the 1881 Cens
